Quick question: Will there be an option to hide the comment history (new tab on the profile) for the public? I fear that keeping it public only makes it too easy for stalking and harrassment campaigns.

If not, it's something that should be considered.

Yes, it's coming.

That's good, thank you!

when did user comments added?
Is there was an update? I was waiting for tis like years. Did I miss smth.

And btw mdl became snappy few days ago. I like it.

How about the "likes" history? Can that be private too?

Please check your privacy settings.

Nice! Thanks!

What does this mean? I'm not understanding.

Reporting two bugs with the comment history:

  1. Bug number one: Privacy feature "friends only" doesn't work correctly (I think):

I borrowed another account and played around with mine (account A) and that one (account B); I tried out the different settings and how/if it hides the comment history.

  • "Everyone" ,"logged-in users" and "only me" works as intended.

  • For "friends only": If account A has this setting, and B does different things, this is the result:

    • B has no relation to A -- history is hidden -- check.

    • B follows A -- history is hidden -- check

    • B is a friend of A -- history is available -- check

    • B has sent a friend request, but A has not accepted it or even rejected the request -- history is available -- FAIL
This means that anyone who wants to see A's comment history just has to send a friend request. As long as this request is not cancelled, even if A has rejected the request, the history is visible to that user.

  1. Bug number 2: Some comments are visible in the comment history but cannot be deleted:

  • To delete a comment, I have to click on the link to access the comment itself (in the feed, the review, the comment section etc.), which is cumbersome but doable.

  • But as soon as the comment is a reply to a post that no longer exists, I cannot access the comment, which means I cannot delete it. These things can happen:

    • [category: title] I get directed to the comment section when I click the link but I cannot find the comment or the comment I replied to.
Maybe the user had me blocked?
I know that it has long been a source of frustration that when there's an argument and a user has us blocked, then we cannot access (see, delete, edit etc.) our own comments made in reply to the user who has blocked us.
[Edit: I just found a comment -- or rather didn't find it when I clicked on the link -- but I can access the user's profile page, so they did not block me. Whatever is going on here?]

    • [category: feed] When I click on a reply I made to a feed post, I get an error massage ("The requested page was not found You can see this page because the URL you are accessing cannot be found.").
Maybe the OP has blocked me, then it's more or less the problem above.
Or maybe the post was deleted? Are replies to a feed post not deleted with the post together? And why can I see part of the original feed post in the comment history, together with the reply I replied to? Is the original post still there in the database? Is maybe nothing really deleted???
(actually, I have wondered for a long time why I get "You won't see this post in News feed" when I delete a feed post of mine -- I put it down to MDL's quirks, but maybe it really is not deleted?)

    • [category: review] In the comment history, I also encounter "On review unavailabe [date] review unavailabe [my comment]. Nothing is clickable.
So, does this mean, the review is deleted (or maybe just hidden), and all replies are still there, just not accessible?

I would love the option to delete comments from the comment history itself, which would resolve these problem, I think. It would also make deleting more than a few comments easier.

The bug with the "friends only" is worrisome.

To add to the above (not a bug, but maybe sth for considering):

The user's own comments written under his own (once public) custom list which later got deleted cannot be accessed directly, thus cannot be deleted from the comment history.

If I don't wish for a certain custom list to exist anymore, it's rather obvious I don't want these comments either. They are public (visible to everyone) and attached to the "List unavailable".

Thank you for adding your observation.

It doesn't work as it should, so for me, this is essentially a bug.

Going over what I wrote and what you wrote, I'd conclude:
If the "parent post" (in feed, a list, a review) is deleted (or maybe it's not deleted in the database, just hidden), the comments on that parent post are not. But they are also not accessible anymore, not even for the user who made the comment.
(I'm not sure what's going on with the comment section on drama pages, though)

And now that the comment history has been made available, the not-deleted-but-inaccessible comments, which nobody could see before, are visible. That is definitely A Problem.

Thank you. I’ll look into this when I get a chance.

The comments are showing up because of how they are stored. They are not directly tied to the content itself, so removing the content does not automatically remove the comments. It’s a bit like cutting off a tree branch, the branch is gone, but what was attached to it can still remain.

This works now, thanks.
