What's the difference between befriending someone and following them, and what kind of notifications or updates do I get from each?

What can points be used for on MDL? The only use I know about is voting on suggestions, so I'm curious if there are other things they're used for.
3. "Recommended For You"
Is this page actually generated by an algorithm based on my watchlist, ratings, and activity? For example, I've never watched a BL drama, yet it feels like almost half of my recommendations are BL titles. 😅 Just curious about how the recommendation system works and what factors influence it.
