  • It's Okay to Not Be Okay

    1. It's Okay to Not Be Okay

    Korean Drama - 2020, 16 episodes

    10

Okay so I know I have a tendency to use a lot of hyperboles but hear me when I say this with 100% sincerity: this is the best drama I've ever seen thus far.

Intense, I know. Let me try to explain.

From a technical standpoint, this series is one of the best examples of how utterly satisfying and emotionally gripping a drama can be when a phenomenal script, incredible acting, and inventive cinematography work in tandem.

There is a wonderful juxtaposition between the dark fairytales and the incredibly raw, honest, very complicated yet realistic approach to deep-rooted childhood trauma. And using Mun-yeong's books as the catalyst in which each character their own (and others’) fears and pain, is a BRILLIANT writing choice. Not only does it push the plot along, but it also leaves room for background characters to get their own isolated stories.

Honestly, where this drama excelled was in how insanely complex and flawed each character was. Each character felt lived-in and emotionally volatile. They were all barely surviving, and I could feel it pressing on me through the screen. The emotional journey they all go on is hard and utterly devastating, and it was hard to watch at times. However, what kept me coming back was the small hints of growth and self-realization the characters experienced each episode. It was emotional whiplash in the best and most rewarding way. The constant ups-and-downs of facing your trauma while simultaneously trying to connect to others equally as traumatized as you, make the character developments of each person feel satisfyingly earned. When they finally reach a milestone in their healing, all you feel is pure elation and relief.

Genuinely, this drama has one of the most realistic depictions of healing I've ever seen. It's never perfect. You never fully heal. You just understand it more and learn to accept those parts of yourself.

    Absolutely incredible watch.

  • He Is Psychometric

    2. He Is Psychometric

    Korean Drama - 2019, 16 episodes

    10

Holy crap, this series was phenomenal.

The story had me on the edge of my seat. The way they wove the past into the present storytelling - it really flowed well and kept me glued to the screen. The characters were written so well; flawed and broken and utterly human.

But what really got me was the acting. Damn, the entire cast's acting was incredible and layered and honest. Park Jin Young (Lee Ahn) was phenomenal - his ability to show every emotion and thought through his eyes really sold me on his character.

Genuinely, I was super impressed by this series and found it really difficult to watch any other series after finishing that matched the quality.

  • Link: Eat, Love, Kill

    3. Link: Eat, Love, Kill

    Korean Drama - 2022, 16 episodes

    10

I find it hard to put into words how I felt about this drama. Not because I didn't like, but because I was honestly surprised how much of a profound impact it had on me. Of course, I absolutely adored the romance, and the murder mystery was intriguing and kept me engaged, but what I keep coming back to is the drama’s deeper themes of regret, loss, and, most importantly, shared healing.

I was initially drawn to this story by its emotion-based plot and a few clips of well-acted scenes. However, I didn’t expect it to be as emotionally gripping as it was. I’m not sure how they did it, by they somehow were able to find a balance between a dark & whimsy murder mystery with a story about a group of deeply broken people pretending not to be. It really showed me how complex people really are, and how we each deal with trauma in different ways in order to survive. I really appreciated the lengths the writer and actors went to in order to show the emotional toll that trauma responses (like self-isolation, denial, lashing out, etc.) can have on ourselves and those around us.

This story meant a lot more to me than I expected it to. I can relate to that self-isolation that comes with seeking indifference & apathy towards anything that makes you feel something. A lot of people can. And I find myself reflecting on this series pretty regularly, especially in times that I want to retreat back into my shell rather than ask for help. As dramatic as it may sound, this story now has a special place in my heart and in the back of my mind, helping to remind me that even when I may feel alone, I’m not. There is always someone to ask for help. To move forward.

    Korean Drama - 2025, 12 episodes

I was drawn to it from an edit I saw with some pretty incredible acting, and without reading anything else about it, decided to give it a shot.

I normally hate the “fan + idol” storylines. The “fan” tends to lean too far into the “obsession” category and is often portrayed as very child-like and naive. Yeah, that’s not for me. However, this one really surprised me with our deeply layered and well-rounded each character was. The “fan” character was more than just a fan. Maeng Se Na is wonderfully layered, intelligent, and emotionally resilient, hidden behind a stoic exterior. Do La Ik is equally layered, suffering from panic attack, grief, harassment, and self-isolation. Both characters feel like real people with their quirks, flaws, and fears. They balance out each other’s characters perfectly, slowly creating a relationship built on trust and emotional vulnerability. Their push-and-pull with each other feels honest and understated, never demanding much from the plot.

On paper, the plot is very simple; nothing too complex - a pretty straight-forward murder investigation with a healthy amount of twists. But where it truly excels is in its character-driven storytelling balanced with a soft, subtle romance. The growth of each character felt realistic and accurately paced. It takes time to trust someone, and I feel like the romance being built on trust and empathy made it honest and incredibly believable.

This was such a refreshing series to watch. The mystery was intriguing while the romance was beautifully-grounded with dialogue that took its time. The acting was absolutely phenomenal and left me rewinding often to watch the performances alone. Nothing felt “overacted” and I could feel everything along with them. The cinematography was subtle, romantic, and beautiful poetic in a natural way. Just gorgeous storytelling all around.

I was gingerly so impressed by this drama and its vulnerable approach to storytelling. Can’t wait for a rewatch.

    Um, woah.

I realize this one has a low rating most like because of its short length, but I actually thought it was perfect.

It's been awhile sense I felt true emotion for anything I'm watching (thanks Lexapro), but this one, despite its 30 minute runtime, had my eyes watering, my throat catching, and my heart hurting. Realistic dialogue mixed with realistic conflict AND THEN add in incredibly raw acting performances? Gah, amazing.

THE ACTING - absolutely perfect in every way. I could relate to both sides, but Cha Jae Hyeon resonated with me the most. I know that feeling when you've grown so accustomed to those around you that it turns to complacency. And that feeling of confusion when you learn the other is hurting because of it. That massive and crushing wave of guilt mixed with desperation that finds its home in the pit of your stomach can be so debilitating. And you could see all of that on his face.

THEN add his performance to the utterly defeated and crumbling emotions of Gang U Jin. THANKS FOR THAT. The part that really hit home was whenever he was holding himself back from having a full-blown break-down. Been there, also, when you have to end the conversation or you'll crumble into a million pieces. OUCH. You could see the years of history between these two characters, and the layers of complicated resentment mixed with desperate love in his eyes. It was truly gut-wrenching and beautifully raw all together.

Honestly, a perfect window into a situation most people can relate to, romantic relationship or not. I didn't expect to be so moved by characters I just met, but here we are. Kudos, Park June Mok & Seol Jong Hwan - you both had me reliving so many memories I thought I'd forgotten. And all in just 30 minutes.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm only 7/28 episodes in and I literally can't stop thinking about this show. The natural acting & chemistry, the fluid writing, the dreamy cinematography. I'm seriously hooked and thoroughly impressed. No doubt, this series will wreck me.
