Most Memorable Squid Game Characters
Sharing my favorite characters from one of the shows closest to my heart—the one that had me absolutely hooked for years
- For me, Season 1 will always reign supreme. It sparked the frenzy and set the tone with its razor-sharp storytelling
- As for Seasons 2 and 3—while I’m glad they exist—they felt more like lucrative follow-ups for the creators (hello, Netflix) than truly necessary chapters in the story
- Still, the characters listed below left lasting impressions on me, whether they were heroes, villains, or something in between
-
Anupam Tripathi
Indian
as Ali Abdul / "No. 199" | Season 1
one of those truly good characters, who did not deserve the ending they got - it is a reminder that good people always don't have good karma - it is a dark truth. His ending in the season 1 was the one that impacted me the most and made me cry - because deep down we know, we need more selfless people like him, even in real life - and so it hurts -
Park Sung Hoon
South Korean
as Cho Hyeon Ju / "No. 120"
Season 2 and 3
Again, He was one of those rare, genuinely good characters who didn’t deserve the fate he got. His tragic ending in Season 3 hit me the hardest—it moved me to tears. It’s a painful reminder that goodness doesn’t always guarantee good ending. His backstory is also lovely - I love how the representation was done so well, without being over the top. Plus having seen this actor only in negative roles before (The Glory, Queen of Tears) - it was so refreshing to see him in such a different character and enact it so convincingly.
If Season 1 had Ali, Season 2 and 3 was all about Hyeon-Ju-shi! -
Lee Jung Jae
South Korean
as Seong Gi Hun / "No. 456"
Season 1, 2 and 3our protagonist who showed us "the way" - now it remains how many will follow it or take the easy road? his journey as a happy-go-lucky guy to a man trying to change the world is exceptionally portrayed - his face literally changed over the seasons - as it would for a man, who's been through hell and back like him. Squid Game would be hollow without Gi-Hun, he was an imperfectly perfect protagonist in every way.
-
Lee Byung Hun
South Korean
as Front Man (Hwang In Ho)
Season 1, 2 and 3he was the moon to the protagonist's sun, the darkness to his light. loved the initial mystery created around him, the shocking reveal as he joins the game to rest the protagonist, his past story, their eventual brotherhood and test of beliefs - he is one of the finest grey and complex characters I have come across.
easy to find faults with his character, but what would we do - if we were put in his shoes? Most would react like Player #333 than Player #456 -
Park Hae Soo
South Korean
as Cho Sang U / "No. 218"
Season 1another well written grey characters - who is the shadow of Front Man and his choices. His actions may have looked evil but then was he wrong in doing what he did to survive? I liked that he was witty, not afraid to raise a voice - perhaps in different circumstances, he would have not been much different from his hyung - Gi Hun?
-
Wi Ha Joon
South Korean
as Hwang Jun Ho
Season 1, 2 and 3
But favorite in Season 1 - that scene when he raises his face beneath the mask ?He was super hot and kept me bothered! ??? He accomplished a lot more in S1 than what he did in S2 and 3 combined. It was a great storyline - younger brother trying to find his missing elder brother and not understanding why his brother made the choices he did, even till the end. -
Gong Yoo
South Korean
as Ddakji Guy/Salesman
Season 1 and 2
If maniac had a face - this would be him. Gong Yoo is a very popular actor of Korea - but I have only seen him in Coffee Prince and Goblin. And then Squid Game happened - and I feel even as a guest role this is one of his most iconic roles ?? The Russian Roulette, Lottery/bun scene, the first ddakji game will forever be imprinted in our minds! -
Kim Joo Ryoung
South Korean
as Han Mi Nyeo / "No. 212"
Season 1She was loud, chaotic and unmissable in Season 1. You hated her but cannot forget her - one o f those characters - who would do anything to win, and yet in the end she showed why they say "Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Sconed". She burned - but not alone, it was satisfying from start to finish.
-
Heo Sung Tae
South Korean
as Jang Deok Su / "No. 101"
Season 1Every good story needs a good villain and that is exactly what this man provided with his character in Season. Someone to hate, loathe and be happy when he was gone? That was this guy. I really like actors who are able to pull of ruthless villains that make you angry just by watching them onscreen - that's some powerful acting - and this guy delivered
-
Park Gyu Young
South Korean
as Kang No Eul
Season 2 and 3
She was the only one apart from Front Man, who showed us the story behind the mask - the other side of the Squid Game. Adding it here - because she was badass, she did what she had to without giving two hoots about anyone else. Her storyline was really interesting and perhaps the only one who I am interested to see in works later on (spin-offs?) -
