OST- analysis of styles and songs

As a musician, I pay a lot of attention to film music. It plays a crucial role in enhancing, guiding, and emphasizing emotions. Several  dramas scores have inspired me to rearrange and perform them on the violin. I have a new album project featuring pieces that deeply move me.

Even though, structurally, many songs follow the same pattern and arrangement— a commercially successful formula— they remain enjoyable to listen to and discover. There's an undeniable depth of emotion and gentleness that emerges from them.

Here is my list of choices. We can analyze other drama music together, tell me from which drama?

    1. The King's Affection

    Korean Drama - 2021, 20 episodes

    9.5

1# Shadow Of You -  Super Junior K.R.Y

A mix of piano, orchestra (classical and romantic vibes), and the singer's youthful style.

    My first K-drama OST  discovery...

  • Love in the Moonlight

    2. Love in the Moonlight

    Korean Drama - 2016, 18 episodes

    Gummy's OST

Gummy is undoubtedly the Celine Dion of K-Drama OSTs— a true powerhouse with emotion, strength, and technique.

She sings beautifully, and her songs are very commercially successful. A popular series from

the 2010-2020s doesn't seem to be complete without a song performed by Gummy.

  • Love in the Moonlight Special

    3. Love in the Moonlight Special

    Korean Special - 2016, 1 episode

All the OSTs are beautiful in this Drama and have a significant impact on the drama.

A special mention goes to the song beautifully performed by Park Bo Gum "My Dearest" — it's wonderfully sung and incredibly romantic. A more traditional and nostalgic style that can tottuch an audience older than the younger generation.

Hwang Chi Yeul - "Because I Miss You

  • Descendants of the Sun

    4. Descendants of the Sun

    Korean Drama - 2016, 16 episodes

    10

1# You Are My Everithing by Gummy  - No need to introduce this hit that everyone knows...

#2 There’s also the second very effective song by Davichi. It's worth mentioning that Davichi is the second powerhouse singer with a lot of success. Gummy and Davichi make a winning duo for K-Dramas from those years.

  • My Demon

    5. My Demon

    Korean Drama - 2023, 16 episodes

    9.0

My Demon has OSTs with more trendy, fashionable vibes rather than romantic or glamorous

ones... tailored for a younger generation. These are effective tracks with a more atmospheric

and ambient feel. The collection of songs is beautiful, but there isn't a standout hit that can distinguish itself like in DOTS . There are also a few subtle influences from Dario Marianelli's

    style.

#1 Our Night is More Beautiful

    #2 Even if we disappear

#3 The Way To Lose You

    #4 Whenever, Wherever

#5 Lasting Like The Last Day

  • Pachinko

    6. Pachinko

    Korean Drama - 2022, 8 episodes

    10

Pachinko is really well-crafted and international by Nico Muhly

#1 . The opening theme is perfect with its retro-chic vibe, Let's Live For Today by Grass Roots, which also found favor with young American men serving overseas during the Vietnam War. The scene with the actors dancing to this music is also very well done.

#2 Viva La Vida by Rose is also very successful and emotional in this version.

  • The King: Eternal Monarch

    7. The King: Eternal Monarch

    Korean Drama - 2020, 16 episodes

    9.5

There are some powerful and hit tracks in this drama. They follow all the winning formulas of
this generation with a carefully crafted orchestration, even though overall, the compositions
    are not very original.

It remains very cinematic and romantically appealing. Let’s also note the winning duo Gummy-Davichi for making us cry from the heart. Yongzoo’s Maze is very subtle with orchestral influences and arrangements reminiscent of Nino Rota's Romeo and Juliet and also Bear McCreary's work on Outlander.

  • Lovely Runner

    8. Lovely Runner

    Korean Drama - 2024, 16 episodes

    9.5

It's impossible not to mention the success of the Lovely Runner album, especially the

performances by ECLIPSE— Sudden Shower and I Think I Did, songs that undoubtedly

    contributed to the drama's success.

But also the other more dynamic tracks.

  • Business Proposal

    9. Business Proposal

    Korean Drama - 2022, 12 episodes

    9.0

One of best tracks of 2022, Love, Maybe by MeloMance is a true hit. The songwriting is simple yet incredibly effective, and the singers perform effortlessly, which makes it very refreshing.

The melody sticks in your head and perfectly matches the drama and its atmosphere.

Not trying to overly Westernize, except for the sections where the bridges and counter-melodies played by the melodica add a cool and nostalgic "western vibe" .

  • Sh**ting Stars

    10. Sh**ting Stars

    Korean Drama - 2022, 16 episodes

Sondia Vincent Blue - My Secret, My Everithing - 2022

A charming duo, with a well-executed polyrhythm and arrangement. A beautiful song with a lolot of softness.

  • When the Phone Rings

    11. When the Phone Rings

    Korean Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

1#See The Light - A very trendy track for 2024 with powerful mixing and effective production. Performed by

Lim Hyunsik, and Composed by  Suhyun Kim, and AllThou.

  • When the Stars Gossip

    12. When the Stars Gossip

    Korean Drama - 2025, 16 episodes

    6.5

A carefully curated selection of songs featuring multiple artists, exclusively focused on the

Hallyu vibe, representing Korea on a global scale.

In the style of Coldplay for Jin ... or hip-hop R&B oriented like Big Naughty... Whether it's

classical music excerpts (Mozart) or symbolic elements like Psy, the soundtrack showcases a

diverse musical identity for Hallyu lovers

  • Hotel King

    13. Hotel King

    Korean Drama - 2014, 32 episodes

    7.5

It's true that we can say the music of this drama feels a bit old-fashioned in its style, with the

composition and interpretation of the songs being very characteristic of the 2010-2014 era,

like Feith, Secret Garden, etc... However, the orchestral pieces by Lee Ji-yong provide a good

dynamic rhythm, with an style that has a variety show vibe... A good rearrangement of these

tracks could be very enjoyable to perform with an orchestra..
