Korean Period Dramas I Have High Hopes From

A personal list for the Korean period shows that look like they will be better than the 98% of the trash period shows that Korea produces. I have quite high hopes.

China rules in the period drama sector, and that is a fact (even in contemporary drama sector along with Taiwan & Japan when the audience actually makes the effort to look for the actual great ones, which are many. A debate for another day). However, a few Korean historical dramas now and then have caught my eye. I don't expect these to outdo the Chinese masterpieces, but I can at least expect them to make a mark for me.

  • My Dearest

    1. My Dearest

    Korean Drama - 2023, 10 episodes

Once in a while we have these rare occurrences where Korean makers suddenly realize that the current period dramas that are being produced are all the same load of sh*t and that they need to make at least one good historical to save their face. This was what they made after realizing that.

I randomly started to check this one out when it was being praised as it aired. I took a sigh, ready to be disappointed again with an overhyped show. Instead, I got a well written plot with accurate styling and zero glamorization. I got a kdrama where for the first time I can say that leads have explosive chemistry. I can finally watch a Korean drama with a well written female lead. They were not scared of the international audiences while writing this, as evident from how many hated and tore apart the FL as the plot progressed for prioritizing family over romance. That was a sign that a masterpiece level Korean historical has finally arrived. And I cannot be more thankful as an period drama lover.

This has allegations of plagiarism of 'Gone With The Wind', but truth be told: a lot of kdramas have plagiarized since forever. If a drama is good enough, I don't care. Because if I do, I will run out of dramas soon. Same happened with 'TMOPB'. Problems arise when they make something terrible even after copying from multiple sources and still serve a lackluster show with laughable script and production design, like in the case of 'Alchemy of Souls'

  • Mr. Sunshine

    2. Mr. Sunshine

    Korean Drama - 2018, 24 episodes

I am expecting well written female characters, and not just one but majority of them (AMA set high standards ^^). I also expect the plot to be well written that makes my heart pierce with the tragic moments. A show set in this era must be tragic, so that it pays respects the era it is set in. I trust KTR, so I know that there won't be any disappointments. I am expecting giving this a 9 above score.

The only thing to be scared about is Kim Eun Sook, the screenwriter. Her previous dramas have all lacked substance and despite being so well rated and highly raved, all I got were disappointments. She cannot write good romances at all. I hope she magically improved while writing this one

  • Six Flying Dragons

    3. Six Flying Dragons

    Korean Drama - 2015, 50 episodes

This feels so much like a Chinese wuxia! The format is also the same as Chinese period dramas, with around 50 episodes. I expect a well written complex plot, great fight scenes and strong/smart female characters.

In the past, Korea used to make better period dramas considering 40 above episodes so that they can tell the story well. Now, it's nothing but trying to kiss the a** of international viewers who have 0 understanding of history, so stories have to be dumbed down for them to grasp. Sigh.

  • Youth of May

    4. Youth of May

    Korean Drama - 2021, 12 episodes

I don't really think that this is a historical, but it is set around the 80s on an important event. So I included it in my list. Anyways, I get this heavy tragic feeling from this show and I love sad and tragic stories. Hoping that the ending is sad, it will make it more beautiful.
