RR I've watched
Gender role reversal shows, where a man and a woman fall in love, with a diverse array of gender dynamics between them, as long as they're not the standard one.
-
1. The Other Half of Me and You
Chinese Drama - 2021, 32 episodes
Machismo douchebag gets transported to a parallel world where the genders are reversed, and falls in love with the same girl who now has a much more dominant attitude.
I love it so much. It calls out so much sexism in such an effective and funny way, and the central couple really works.

2. Colorful Love: Genderless Danshi ni Aisareteimasu
Japanese Drama - 2021, 10 episodes
Girl is really into her effeminate ex-bestie, who happens to come back around and reciprocate. The secondary couple is also really fun, a narcissistic yet secretly insecure male diva pines over a no nonsense businesswoman.
There are several other male characters who express femininity in different ways. That's really what it's about, exploring male femininities in an appreciative way, without it being gay.
There are no trans people in here.

3. Monster Hunt
Chinese Movie - 2015
So... this is fully a mainstream animated kids movie that includes mpreg. I lived in China when this movie came out and ads for it were EVERYWHERE, but I didn't watch it until years later haha. This is the 35th highest grossing movie of all time in China, and at time of release it held the number one spot, which it kept for two years, that's how mainstream it is. Link to source.
Also the main guy is incompetent and the main girl is a badass, and they do play on the gender role reversal of their dynamic. He sews, cooks, mothers, gives birth, she murders monsters. She ties him up in a flirty way and he's into it and all. It's all fun and jokes and this is not a romance movie at all, but still, a kids movie in 2015? No wonder China is the main country that does RR shows now haha.

4. Secrets of the Shadow Sect
Chinese Drama - 2024, 24 episodes
Cold somewhat murderous high status pretty lady with a penchant for dominance takes a (seemingly) less competent lower status man with a penchant for submission under her wing. He's actually plotting against her but falls for her before his plans can come to fruition, and they save each other's lives instead.
This plot is a genre in itself. Several other shows in this list more or less follow this formula. From here on out it'll be called the standard Chinese RR plot.

5. Ore no Bijoka ga Tomaranai?!
Japanese Drama - 2023, 8 episodes
Guy with social anxiety and a fear of talking to women overcomes his fears by working as a drag queen host at a bar. A very cozy show centered around healing and gender.
-
6. My Lady General
Chinese Drama - 2023, 23 episodes
Standard Chinese RR plot
-
7. My Beloved Wife
Chinese Drama - 2024, 20 episodes
Standard Chinese RR plot
-
8. Otonari Complex
Japanese Drama - 2025, 8 episodes
Cross-dressing besties realize they like each other and dawdle about what to do about it. I loved this so much, up until the last episode, where they bafflingly mostly put them back in their traditional gender roles.
-
9. Ladies on Top
Japanese Drama - 2026, 8 episodes
Girl who is ashamed of wanting to be the dominant partner in bed meets guy who is ashamed of wanting to be the submissive partner.
This is in large part, though not entirely, about unconventional sexual dynamics, comfort levels, communication and acceptance, but they've replaced all sex scenes with ice skating rink analogies. Thank gosh, that's great for my ace ass haha, because I wouldn't have been able to watch this at all otherwise. Already had to skip parts.

10. Zhang Gong Zhu Zai Shang
Chinese Drama - 2022, 27 episodes
Standard Chinese RR plot
-
11. My Merman Brother
Chinese Drama - 2023, 24 episodes
Standard Chinese RR plot
-
12. Dong Lan Xue
Chinese Drama - 2023, 30 episodes
Standard Chinese RR plot
-
13. Fall in Love with Mr. Mermaid
Chinese Drama - 2022, 20 episodes
Merman escapes from lab and seeks refuge with director of wildlife protection agency. She's like 'it's weird for you to randomly show up at my house like this, but you're adorable, so... ok.'
This one is not at all competent, production-wise, acting-wise, anything. But I didn't hate it. It is very RR.
-
14. Na Ge Nan Ren You Cha You Jiao
Chinese Drama - 2025, 58 episodes
-
15. Lovely Writer
Thai Drama - 2021, 12 episodes
BL with RR support couple
-
16. Goukon ni Ittara Onna ga Inakatta Hanashi
Japanese Drama - 2022, 10 episodes
Cross-dressing butch women toy with cutesy guys they like.
Normally when BL shows are accused of fetishization, that's kind of a BS way to guilt-trip straight women over watching gay stuff, by playing into their purity culture upbringing, but in this case, yeah, it's fetishization, especially of the guys. They're not always treated like full human beings with feelings and agency, and emphasis is constantly put on their submissive role in the dynamic.
There are parts of this that I really hated, and parts that I loved. It is a mixed bag cringe-fest, but it is self-aware of that. I don't know if that makes it better.
