Gay shit I watched

I prefer: goofy silly stories, complex plots and characters, gender-nonconformity, relationship dynamics in which both partners are equal (or at least both have a form of power, whether that be status or physical) and tease each other a lot, wholesomeness and good communication, slow burn, supernatural gimmicks, bright colors, indie productions, angst with a happy ending, queer themes such as found family, self-acceptance, social deviance and allegories for systemic oppression/cisheteronormativity.

I dislike: plots that revolve around jealousy and miscommunication, plots that take themselves too seriously without actually containing authenticity or depth, plots that follow a standard BL/GL formula without any innovation, sad grey gritty-ness, graphic violence, sexual violence, gore, full nudity, unexamined judgment towards minorities. Those'll have lower ratings on average.

If you think you vibe with that, take a look. If not, I'm sure you can find some other list that works for you.

>9 means it's brilliant

>8 I'd def recommend.

7 means it's fun enough, might recommend, but there are no masterpieces here

6 means it's watchable but nothing special, standard fare.

5 means it's got some amount of redeeming qualities, but also issues.

<4 means I kinda hated it

mlm = gay or bi guys in here

wlw = lesbian or bi women in here

T = trans people in here. I don't count standard comedic relief trans women in Thai shows. They have to actually be a character.

ace = ace and/or aro people in here

GNC = gendernonconforming people in here

Happy endings unless stated otherwise under the 'spoiler' tag. BL or GL unless stated otherwise. Current and dropped follow at the end.

I've decluttered the list by moving everything under 100 minutes here: https://kisskh.at/list/1Xz6mOj3

  • Be My Favorite

    6. Be My Favorite

    Thai Drama - 2023, 12 episodes

    9.5

    mlm. ~470 minutes

Genuine attempt at progressivism, both feminism and gay rights. Time travel is well done.

Has some benevolently acephobic messaging that I don't appreciate but you can't have everything in life.

  • 180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us

    7. 180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us

    Thai Drama - 2022, 8 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~370 minutes

This should not be your first Thai BL. It honestly shouldn't be among your first ten Thai BL's.

The story is complex, with hidden layers of meaning, and relies on some understanding of the nuances of how referring to others and yourself works in Thai. There are many versions of 'I' and 'you', and the differences are important here.

cw: age gap, but if you understand what the characters represent on the second layer of meaning, then actually no age gap.

  • A Tale of Thousand Stars

    8. A Tale of Thousand Stars

    Thai Drama - 2021, 10 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~650 minutes

Slow burn. Interesting plot and setting. Lots of yearning and indirect flirting.

    cw: bunch of guns

  • Ayaka-chan wa Hiroko-senpai ni Koishiteru

    9. Ayaka-chan wa Hiroko-senpai ni Koishiteru

    Japanese Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

    9.0

    wlw. ~190 minutes

Girl tries really hard to get her crush to see that she likes her, but crush is under the impression that girl is straight and will do anything to avoid her.

This is hilarious and authentic and adorable and makes me giddy and it's an absolute blast to watch.

  • Bad Buddy

    10. Bad Buddy

    Thai Drama - 2021, 12 episodes

    9.0

    mlm, wlw. ~660 minutes

A successful attempt at destroying the ubiquitous top/bottom distinction. Lots of mutual pestering. Good acting.

  • Cherry Magic

    11. Cherry Magic

    Thai Drama - 2023, 12 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~540 minutes

Incredibly adorable and wholesome. Excellent demonstration of how communication is supposed to work in relationships. They say what they mean, and they assume the best in one another. It's refreshing.

Spoiler: This is an adaptation of a Japanese manga. I heard one character was supposed to be aro ace in that. This character is strongly hinted to be aro ace in this adaptation as well, but ends up in a relationship by the end.

  • Gelboys

    12. Gelboys

    Thai Drama - 2025, 7 episodes

    9.0

mlm, GNC, background T and wlw. ~400 minutes

This is not at all your standard BL.

Life in the information age is cramped, crowded, colorful, tacky, fast, everchanging, casual, and full of endless cheap little joys, and maybe all of that can be a good thing. The setting is almost more important than the story. The camera doesn't focus on the main characters. They are hard to find in the busy crowds scuttling about around them.

Four boys are into one another, or maybe not, decisions are hard, and it turns out that not making decisions hurts the people you're flirting with.

  • HIStory3: Trapped

    13. HIStory3: Trapped

    Taiwanese Special - 2019, 20 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~500 minutes

Mafia x cop. It's fun, what can I say.

cw: kidnapper x kidnappee, but it's not anywhere near as fucked up as in KinnPorsche

  • I Told Sunset about You

    14. I Told Sunset about You

    Thai Drama - 2020, 5 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~400 minutes

Beautiful cinematography. The lead has a frustrating personality, but this is still really good.

Also, PP Krit is a pop star with a YouTube channel that you should check out because it is very gay.

  • Jack & Joker: U Steal My Heart!

    15. Jack & Joker: U Steal My Heart!

    Thai Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~800 minutes

Robin-hood kinda guy does an enemies to lovers thing with good guy forced to do bad things. I love how every character, including background characters, gets agency, a chance to influence the story, and I love how distinct and internally consistent they all are.

    cw: transphobic charicature, graphic violence

  • Koisenu Futari

    16. Koisenu Futari

    Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes

    9.0

    Ace, background wlw. ~240 minutes.

Two aro ace people who feel alone in the world become each other's found family while helping each other deal with the world's lack of understanding.

I admit that my ace ass is biased here, but OH MY GOD. I didn't expect this to be so good and so relatable. Why do we keep settling for ambiguous one-off lines when this is what representation could look like? It's unapologetically and politically ace. I've never seen anything like it. I don't usually feel like media applies to me, but this makes me feel like people like me exist.

The sub quality is not ideal, but not the worst.

  • Laws of Attraction

    17. Laws of Attraction

    Thai Drama - 2023, 8 episodes

    9.0

    mlm, wlw. ~440 minutes

Overly dramatic soap opera, but the plot is good, the characters are fleshed out, and it calls out structures of political and economic power pretty harshly, so what's not to love?

The special effects are terrible, and the sound effects a bit obtrusive but I promise it's worth it.

cw: murder, torture, death of a child and a dog, not overly graphic but definitely pulls on your heartstrings.

  • Manner of Death

    18. Manner of Death

    Thai Drama - 2020, 14 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~630 minutes

Murder mystery, speaking truth to power, good plot.

cw: murder, non-romanticized sexual assault, not graphic

  • Marry My Dead Body

    19. Marry My Dead Body

    Taiwanese Movie - 2022

    9.0

    mlm. ~130 minutes

Not a BL, but definitely 'gay shit'. Homophobic police officer is forced to marry an effeminate gay ghost and find out why he died.

Very campy. Really funny. I had a blast watching this.

  • My School President

    20. My School President

    Thai Drama - 2022, 12 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~660 minutes

Singing high school students are whipped for each other.  Excellently fluffy.

  • My Tooth Your Love

    21. My Tooth Your Love

    Taiwanese Drama - 2022, 12 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~420 minutes

Good communication, mental health themes, character growth. Idk man, it doesn't do anything revolutionary, but it just does what it does well.

  • Not Me

    22. Not Me

    Thai Drama - 2021, 14 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~630 minutes

The political storytelling and visuals on this one are EPIC. The dynamic between the leads is pretty classic for a Thai BL, as in trope-y, top/bottom, which is why this got a 9 instead of a 10.

  • Spare Me Your Mercy

    23. Spare Me Your Mercy

    Thai Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~370 minutes

A complex plot about the ethics and illegality of euthanasia. Doctor who secretly practices it seduces cop who's investigating him. There is an excellent amount of real substantive conflict between the leads that in no way relies on misunderstandings or jealousy.

Sammon's plotting skills are just simply better than anyone else in the BL industry right now. I mean, she wrote Triage and Manner of Death too. She's proven herself. I will watch anything she produces from now on.

  • Step by Step

    24. Step by Step

    Thai Drama - 2023, 12 episodes

    9.0

    mlm, GNC. ~540 minutes

This is so wholesome. A breath of fresh air. It breaks several BL norms that need to be broken. The ex-boyfriend gets to be an okay guy, the effeminate gay gets to have an actual sympathetic and significant role that isn't just comedic relief, and he gets a loving boyfriend, the top/macho man gets to be insecure and cry, they get to have actual issues in their relationship with how they treat each other, and resolve them through effective communication. There is no 'we are fated to be with each other and all other relationships were insignificant and issues can't really matter because in the end we'll definitely end up together.' It's refreshing. But it's also a really slow slow-burn and some people don't like that.

  • The Boyfriend

    25. The Boyfriend

    Japanese TV Show - 2024, 10 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~430 minutes

The first Japanese gay dating reality show. This is an excellent blend of authenticity and storytelling. I love how the members were given a long time to get to know each other, how they were given time and space for rest and reflection, rather than putting them under lots of unfair pressure to increase the likelihood of drama, and how there was no need to villainize any of the members. This dating show stands out far above the rest.

  • The Eclipse

    26. The Eclipse

    Thai Drama - 2022, 12 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~540 minutes

This was made by queer people and you can tell. Has serious themes of suicide, internalized homophobia and struggling with self-acceptance, oppression (school and curse are allegories for society and religion) and finding community. But don't worry no sad ending.

  • The Sign

    27. The Sign

    Thai Drama - 2023, 12 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~640 minutes

This is dramatic, funny, heartfelt, and it has a competent plot, but the special effects are not amazing.

Copaganda. Special military unit guys. One has premonitions and constantly has to save his love interest from dying. Plot twist, they're both reincarnated magic creatures.

  • The Sign Special Episode Encore

    28. The Sign Special Episode Encore

    Thai Special - 2024, 1 episode

    9.0

    mlm. ~85 minutes

    Follow-up in the same vein.

  • Top Form

    29. Top Form

    Thai Drama - 2025, 11 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~500 minutes

Rookie actor likes his co-star a lot, but co-star mainly sees him as a rival trying to take his place in the spotlight.

Excellent pacing and drama. Not a moment feels like wasted time. If you ranked all BL ships' chemistries, this one would come out as number 1, no doubt.

    cw: sleep kiss, implied rape

  • Until We Meet Again

    30. Until We Meet Again

    Thai Drama - 2019, 17 episodes

    9.0

    mlm. ~770 minutes

The plot is excellent and dramatic. The dynamic between the leads is stiff and uncomfortable. Very angsty. Soulmates and reincarnation.

cw: suicide, pretty dang intense. Ending  of show is not tragic.

  • 31. Wandee Goodday

    Thai Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

    9.0

    mlm, background ace. ~580 minutes

A heartbroken doctor slowly learns to love again with a sweetheart of a boxer who has some trauma of his own to sort through. This is silly, hilarious, heartfelt, progressive, sex positive, emotionally mature, and so sweet.

The ace guy didn't get a story arc or character arc. It's one step up from nothing I guess.

  • Yes or No

    32. Yes or No

    Thai Movie - 2010

    9.0

    wlw, GNC. ~106 minutes

Tomboy roommate x homophobic roommate. Both have internalized and societal homophobia to overcome. It does a great job pulling on your heartstrings. This really does have its charm. Gay people made this.

  • A Man Who Defies the World of BL

    33. A Man Who Defies the World of BL

    Japanese Special - 2021, 1 episode

    9.0

mlm, mlm, mlm, mlm, mlm, mlm. ~120 minutes

This is possibly the campiest show in existence. This is ridiculous and self-aware about it. It makes fun of the outrageous unrealistic-ness of classic Japanese BL tropes by exaggerating them, using them one after another, and having the main character name them explicitly, but I promise there is nothing homophobic about this. This is hilarious. All of the BL couples constantly inthe background of every scene is what makes this the best thing.

  • A Man Who Defies the World of BL Season 2

    34. A Man Who Defies the World of BL Season 2

    Japanese Special - 2022, 1 episode

    9.0

  • Zettai BL ni Naru Sekai VS Zettai BL ni Naritakunai Otoko 2024

    35. Zettai BL ni Naru Sekai VS Zettai BL ni Naritakunai Otoko 2024

    Japanese Special - 2024, 6 episodes

    9.0

    ~144 minutes

  • 4Minutes

    36. 4Minutes

    Thai Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

    8.5

    mlm. ~360 minutes

The production value on this is epic, the plot is brilliant and the acting is great.  This is not my style of media, in terms of the amount of graphic horrible shit on screen, but I can't not give this piece of art the recognition it deserves.

I just learned that one of the actors was only 18 while filming this and given the scenes he did, I don't think that's cool.

cw: nudity (butts), sex scenes, guns, murder, lots of main character death, implied rape. Still, the ending isn't sad, mostly.

  • About Youth

    37. About Youth

    Taiwanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes

    8.5

    mlm. ~200 minutes

    Taiwanese Heartstopper. It's sweet.

  • Boys Like Boys

    38. Boys Like Boys

    Taiwanese TV Show - 2023, 10 episodes

    8.5

    mlm, GNC. ~470 minutes

Dating show. Format copied from the Korean show 'His Man'.

They keep making me cry. This is more like therapy than like a dating show. Friendship for the win.

  • Century of Love

    39. Century of Love

    Thai Drama - 2024, 10 episodes

    8.5

    mlm. ~600 minutes

Guy's lover dies so he uses a magic rock to live 100 years longer so he can meet her again when she reincarnates, but oops, she's a guy, now what?

I love this old-fashioned stern guy being flabbergasted by his attraction to a modern twink who doesn't believe in all of this magic and 'love at first sight' crap.

The drama and plot of this are EXCELLENT. Really pulls you in from beginning to end. Acting is great, cinematography is decent, special effects not so great but not to the point that it's annoying.

  • Fragrance of the First Flower

    40. Fragrance of the First Flower

    Taiwanese Drama - 2021, 6 episodes

    8.5

    wlw. ~90 minutes

This deals with internalized homophobia. It feels true to life. Feels unfinished without season 2

cw: lead cheats on her husband

  • Fragrance of the First Flower Season 2

    41. Fragrance of the First Flower Season 2

    Taiwanese Drama - 2025, 12 episodes

    8.5

    wlw. ~300 minutes

After having spent 7 years apart, they reconnect. Will they be able to make it work this time, or will they still be thwarted by internalized homophobia, or a poor work/life balance?

I love how real the characters and interactions feel.

    Autistic kid rep is mid.

  • Love for Love's Sake

    42. Love for Love's Sake

    Korean Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

    8.5

    mlm. ~240 minutes

He ends up in a dating game/novel and has to make one character happy. Or that's what the plot seems to be in the beginning, but twists and turns abound. Excellent. Some parts were confusingly edited, but overall, this is angsty and sweet and well written.

  • Love in the Big City

    43. Love in the Big City

    Korean Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

    8.5

    mlm, GNC. ~400 minutes

Not a BL. This is queer media in the style that western gay stories often take. Not a romcom but a 'slice of life' that includes romance. This is revolutionary representation for South Korea. It is really funny from time to time, but sometimes also a bit slow. Definitely very much worth watching.

  • My Stand-In

    44. My Stand-In

    Thai Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

    8.5

    mlm. ~720 minutes

This is a mainland Chinese story, adapted by a Thai company, but with a Chinese director. You can tell it's largely Chinese rather than Thai. It's less fluffy, less silly, less campy and more angsty, dark, fucked up and complex.

Stuntman gets toyed with by rich asshole, dies, gets body swapped, and gets back in the same position with the same rich asshole. Is rich asshole redeemable?

Yeah it's fucked up, but the plot is interesting and I was hooked from beginning to end.

cw: terrible consent politics, guns and death.

  • Pluto

    45. Pluto

    Thai Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

    8.5

    wlw. ~540 minutes

Messy drama involving cheating, lots of deceit, and twins switching places. Excellent twists and turns. And blind advocacy. Also it's so ridiculously pretty.

  • Secrets Happened on the Litchi Island

    46. Secrets Happened on the Litchi Island

    Chinese Drama - 2025, 7 episodes

    8.5

    mlm. ~80 minutes

Mellow realistic rural romance that's mostly soft and warm but also deals with fear, doubt and internalized homophobia. Really excellent. Has special episodes.

The actors are the same age, but there is an implied age gap between the characters, not sure how big.

  • Secrets Happened on the Litchi Island Extra

    47. Secrets Happened on the Litchi Island Extra

    Chinese Special - 2025, 14 episodes

    8.5

    mlm. ~60 minutes

A lengthy happily ever after for the Secrets Happened on the Litchi Island couple. Pure fluff, but I'm sure that for China showing that queer people can have a happy life is an entirely political act.

One thing I don't appreciate is how they physically push and pull at each other, not always in a playful or consensual way.

  • Sleep with Me

    48. Sleep with Me

    Filipino Drama - 2022, 6 episodes

    8.5

    wlw. ~120 minutes

Bi girl who can't keep a relationship due to trust issues meets cute radio host.

Well-acted, funny, great cinematography, feels based in real experience, disability representation (sleep disorder + wheelchair).

  • Unknown

    49. Unknown

    Taiwanese Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

    8.5

    mlm. ~360 minutes

Orphaned teenager adopts homeless boy. Years later, homeless boy has grown up to be upstanding man who is very into his adoptive 'brother'.

Excellent acting, well-written. Overall just competent, solid.

cw: fairly graphic streetfighting match. Bunch of guns.

  • 50. Us

    Thai Drama - 2025, 12 episodes

    8.5

    wlw. ~540 minutes

She likes the girl that she helped her brother pursue as a girlfriend, also, ulterior motives and plots to dethrone an evil dad.

This show, it hits me in the feels so hard. The way it resolves all of its conflict feels so fresh, so unexpected, in such a good way. It says  that you can't win by screwing others over, by lying, by manipulating. Radical kindness will get you much further in life. The communication skills in this one are exemplary.

  • Vice Versa

    51. Vice Versa

    Thai Drama - 2022, 12 episodes

    8.5

    mlm. ~660 minutes

Nothing revolutionary here, just a well done classic BL. Funny, good communication and cooperative problem solving. It's got a supernatural gimmick and I'm always up for those.

  • 2gether

    52. 2gether

    Thai Drama - 2020, 13 episodes

    8.0

    mlm. ~650 minutes

    cw: kinda femme-phobic

  • A Boss and a Babe

    53. A Boss and a Babe

    Thai Drama - 2023, 12 episodes

    8.0

    mlm. ~430 minutes

Strict boss x manic pixie dream boy intern. They have character development, backstory trauma that actually impacts the story, actual communication, discussion of healthy boundaries, they got me to get emotional. But it is pretty slow and I think that's why it's not generally very popular.

  • BL Drama no Shuen ni Narimashita: Crank Up Hen

    54. BL Drama no Shuen ni Narimashita: Crank Up Hen

    Japanese Special - 2023, 3 episodes

    8.0

  • Blank

    55. Blank

    Thai Drama - 2024, 6 episodes

    8.0

    wlw. ~200 minutes

Flirty girl keeps chasing aloof artist almost twice her age. The acting is excellent, the plot is coherent, the production value is good.

I wasn't really comfortable with the age gap, but it gets addressed, and the younger girl is absolutely 100% in the driver's seat the whole time. IRL it would still be a no, but this is fiction.

    Related to GAP the series.

cw: mild physical abuse from parent

  • Blank Season 2

    56. Blank Season 2

    Thai Drama - 2024, 6 episodes

  • Call Me by No-Name

    59. Call Me by No-Name

    Japanese Drama - 2025, 8 episodes

    8.0

    wlw. ~200 minutes

Either watch it twice or do not watch it at all. Every second is filled with symbolism that won't necessarily make sense on your first watch. An exploration of trauma, what it does to someone's personality and self esteem, and learning what love is from scratch.

cw: SA, child abuse, not graphic.

  • Choco Milk Shake

Plot and character motivation for Hia Lian are confusing on the first watch, but things actually do fall into place on second watch. He is not as fickle as he seems, he is just cunning.

Impulsive broke dude meets shy deaf classmate and strikes a deal, note-taking for bento lunches.

This is really solid. Hits me right in the feels. Very convincing.  Excellent disability rep.

The one thing that bugs me is that the queerness of this has been toned down and invisibilized as much as possible (e.g. the camera angle kisses, straight-passing actors, and not having their relationship change at all after getting together). It makes me feel like the production and actors are uncomfortable with the gayness of the show. I don't want queerness to feel taboo in BL shows.

But the disability rep is really excellent. That's what got this an 8.

Insecure gay boy with self-destructive habits and a shield made of humor finds the greenest flag in history and falls for him. At times this feels almost autobiographical. It deals with internalized homophobia and how it can make you betray yourself, and dealing with teenage confusion about what feelings mean.

cw: starts with a scene in which a minor has just had sex with an adult, but there is nothing graphic about it and this does not continue.

  • 84. Kiseki: Dear to Me

    Taiwanese Drama - 2023, 13 episodes

    8.0

    mlm. ~325 minutes

Excellent acting, excellent plot, excellent visuals, excellent angst, excellent fluff, excellent teasing. You will enjoy this.

Medical student taking in injured gentle gangster who likes to tease. Gangster does great as a mock househusband. The age gap is not really ok, but the 17 year old is the aggressive one and the top, and the gangster is nothing but gentle.

There's a scene in which the sister walks in on gay kissing, and instead of freaking out about her brother being gay, just smiles and walks away, and I think that's an amazing way to subvert the 'a gay couple can barely kiss once before they get walked in on and all hell breaks loose for them' trope, which is so common, and honestly kinda traumatic. 'Maybe it should actually be totally safe and okay to be ourselves', is what this show says.

One of the four guys gets to dress stereotypically gay and still be a badass gangster, and not the butt of the joke, but an actual fleshed out character, and I'm sorry to say but that is still SO rare in BL.

This show has the intention to change the genre and make it queerer. I love this, but it also does have issues.

There's one scene in which one guy is too drunk and emotionally vulnerable to consent, and the other guy knows it's wrong and still has first time sex with him. He heavily regrets doing that, but given the lighting and slowmo of that scene, it is romanticized.

cw: it's a mafia show, there's going to be murder. Age gap. Consent issues.

Brand new roommates. One of them is rich and tells them he'll pay them if they can hook him up with his crush. Hijinks ensue and of course they all end up pairing up and falling for each other instead. Mostly a comedy.

I like that the four main guys have such different attitudes towards their queerness. One is very confident and promiscuous, another is monogamous and recently heartbroken, another is too shy and sheltered to have explored much at all, and the fourth is in the denial closet.

There's sex positivity and queerness in here that is done through characters talking about the topc, rather than showing a bunch of explicit sex on screen, and I really appreciate how that normalizes the topic instead of idealizing it.

They start out really awkward, but don't give up just yet, because they really grow close to one another. • Love Sick

    87. Love Sick

    Thai Drama - 2014, 12 episodes

    8.0

    mlm. ~540 minutes

Warning: simply skip the first episode. It sucks, adds nothing to the plot, and has a completely different tone from the rest of the series.

The Thai BL that opened the flood gates way back when. It's interesting to see where the tropes originated, and honestly, they are better executed here than in most subsequent Thai BL's. It's sweet and innocent. But there is a lot of uninteresting straight stuff to skip through (which can easily be done without missing any plot concerning the gayness), and if you want to keep track of all the characters, you had better note down their names and key words because dang there are a lot of them.

It deals with some heavy teen themes. I know someone had a sex tape leaked but I don't know if that was season one or two of love sick.  I know there is classism, cheating, slutshaming and a toxic straight relationship somewhere in these, although the show judges all of these things negatively and does not romanticize it.
