Ng Cho Fan appeared in the 1932 classic 'Gunshot at Midnight'. He later took part in two films on the war with the Japanese 'Lifeline' in 1935 and 'Melody of Life' in 1937. In 1948 Ng started a movement to "clean up" the Cantonese film industry. A year later he formed the South China Film Industry Workers Union. In 1952 he founded Union Film Enterprise Ltd with Cheung Ying, Pak Yin, Wong Man Lei, a number of other film workers, twenty-one of them in all. The company's goal was to make serious movies that closely reflect life in Hong Kong society and also promote the dignity of the film as an art form. Ng starred in the 1953 production 'Spring', which won him the Greatest Individual Achievement Award given by the Cultural Ministry of the People's Republic of China. "Movie King of South China" was how Ng was sometimes called in his time... He later retired from acting and emigrated to Canada. In 1993 he was given the Hong Kong Film Awards Special Commemorative Award. He died in the same year in Canada.
