He was scouted by SM Entertainment (SM엔터테인먼트) after passing a global audition in Hong Kong. He received training in modelling before switching to idol preparations and learning singing, rapping, and dancing. He was introduced as part of SM ROOKIES in April 2017.
He made his debut in March 2018 as NCT's rapper, vocalist and visual for their first-ever full-length album, "Empathy", which included all NCT members at the time. He then made his debut in January 2019 as WAYV's lead rapper, sub-vocalist, visual, center and face of the group with their single album, "The Vision".
In October 2019, SM Entertainment decided to create a project group with members of several groups in order to promote overseas. He debuted as SUPERM's lead rapper with their first self-titled EP.
In August 2021, a South Korean netizen claiming to be his ex-girlfriend uploaded a post on her social media and accused him of gaslighting and being a gold digger. Two days later, SM Entertainment released a statement to announce that he would be halting his activities to reflect on his actions. In May 2023, SM announced that he would be departing the group and its sub-units to pursue his individual endeavors, but he will remain with the agency.
In April 2024, he made his debut as a solo artist with the single album "Renegade".
