Kwon Bo A, known simply as Boa (stylized as BoA), is a South Korean singer-songwriter and actress. She dropped out of high school but later passed the High School Graduation Certification Examination.

She was discovered by SM Entertainment (SM엔터테인먼트) talent agents when she accompanied her older brother, a music video director, to a talent search in 1998. She then spent two years as a trainee before making her debut in August 2000 with the studio album, "ID; Peace B".

She released the Japanese version of her debut single in May 2005, and she made her official debut in Japan in March 2022 with the studio album "Listen to My Heart". She became the first South Korean pop star to have a successful debut in Japan following the elimination of commercial and political barriers that had restricted the import and export of entertainment between the countries since the end of World War II.

She made her acting debut in 2013 when she appeared in KBS' two-episode drama special "Expect to Date". She has expanded her activities to include appearances on variety shows, judge/mentor on music competitions, and is often called the "Queen of K-Pop". She was named an honorary director at SM Entertainment in early 2014.

In December 2021, SM decided to create a new project called GIRLS ON TOP (걸스 온 탑). The concept involved 7 female idols from the company joining forces to form a group with a rotating lineup depending on the genre, theme and other factors. She was part of the project's first group, GOT THE BEAT (갓 더 비트), and released the digital single "Step Back" in January 2022. SM ended the project after 1 year and 3 months after Kakao acquired part of the company.
