In early 2011, SM Entertainment (SM엔터테인먼트) formed two separate groups, EXO-K and EXO-M, with plans to have one perform in South Korea and the other in China.
He made his debut in April 2012 as EXO-M's main dancer, sub-vocalist and sub-rapper with the Chinese version of their first EP, "Mama". For several years, the groups performed separately until the release of their third EP, "Overdose", in 2014, when they began performing as a single group and have continued to do so until now.
In October 2016, he made his debut as a solo artist with the EP "Lose Control". He went on hiatus in July 2017 due to his busy schedule in China and only contributed with vocals for the Chinese version of the song "Tempo" in 2018. He returned to EXO's lineup in mid-2021.
In October 2020, he founded his own entertainment company called Chromosome Entertainment Group.
In April 2022, his contract with SM ended, and he decided not to renew it. He left the company, but he didn't leave the group. He is active in China as a singer, actor and producer.
In mid-2025, he announced a comeback with EXO after 4 years as a solo artiste in China. He officially made his EXO comeback with EXO's 8th album: REVERXE.
