Pachinko was a 2017 finalist for the National Book Award for fiction. In August 2018, it was announced that Apple Inc. had obtained the screen rights to the novel for development as a television series for Apple TV. The series consisted of eight episodes which premiered in March 2022. In April 2022, the series was renewed for a second season.
Lee is also the cousin of actress Kim Hye Eun, who starred in the drama Twenty-Five Twenty-One.
