it could be that the Jiyul didnt know Jayoung's intentions/view the entire time, why she was acting the way she was. He didnt know she had a crush on him and what for. U see, he only later realized who she finally was and that it was more love from Jayoung... she obviously just wasnt direct about it. So if he was confused the entire time, which he was, idk if it was necessary for him to say he had an ex gf. Shes an EX anyways trying to win him back lol 😅

indeed its similar in ways! but FACT check: the novel/manhwa that this drama is based on, comes from a novel that was published in mid 2019 of the same title: https://ridibooks.com/books/3866000001?_rdt_sid=event_subgroup&_rdt_idx=0 . So, the plot of Once Upon a Small Town was written and existed already even before HTCC aired in 2021 😁
