Should Hee Su's character in this adaptation be an empty shell until that point (the adaptation's season 2)?

Adaptations can accelerate the introduction of some elements from the source material to strengthen the story and its characters. The same tactic could've been used with the second gay couple, teasing or foreshadowing their presence ahead of time

A faithful, committed adaptation wouldn't have added a straight storyline to fill time. The 40-minute duration of each of the 10 episodes would've been invested in exploring Hee Su's character arc. Instead, the straight storyline that doesn't exist in the source material has occupied valuable screen time. Don't you question the intentions behind it?

They were hinted at in your opinion, the author didn't confirm anything. As far as the canon (source material) goes, Chan Yeong and Ji Yu are just friends, nothing more. They're not the stars of the show to end up together
