1st thing 1st, Hidden Love and The First Frost is not same drama.
2nd thing 2nd, L cast doing fine what they require to do.

The First Frost has its own problem, to know the problem, we need to see wider C entertainment industry's approach to Modern drama, and there approach to adaptation of a novel.

approach to Modern drama, they mostly take two opposite detection, it either sunshine and rainbows or it is sad and gloomy tone. or it is heavily professional base.
The First Frost's story line as far as it going it suppose to go some were in middle. not sunshine and rainbows nor too much sad and gloomy tone.

as it take too much sad and gloomy tone, to some people it is unapproachable, and to some people it will make them to say what a complex story, what a depth, what a complex-grey characters. and The First Frost have all of this.

and people will bickering over this, but no one will say The First Frost's story line as far as it going it suppose to go some were in middle. not sunshine and rainbows nor too much sad and gloomy tone.

they take novel like some BIBLE.
for The First Frost I did not read novel so I can not comment on that.

can any one answer this, why china has too many time travel adaption????????????

there might be many negative point,
so 1st the positive one, Liu Shi Shi and Shawn Dou did fantastic job for there character. and also other cast
it might be THE best portrait of Wu Zetian as Emperor/Empress. when she take the power, she already was a fully realised ruler.
cinematography was fantastic, production approach to cinematography and editing is very similar to MOVIE.
flashback scenes most perfect one I seen recently, not too long or not too many scenes, specially THE execution scene and Liu Shi Shi hypnotising woman.

now negative one, rather I should say critical approach to drama,
this drama is a prefect example, when production have enough budget they can make fantastic drama from a with very linear story,

so 1st thing 1st, last few EP was somehow unnecessary, it feel like two story line attache together with glue.

as i say before, It is a drama with very linear story, with dramatic way, people will feel Twist after Twist.
Cdrama with 28 to 32 EP always tend to shallow. it cant have a layered story, production fill the hole with colorful and dramatic scenes.
and it was a drama with very linear story, with many good bad and silly plot TWIST.
I find last few EP they just dragged it on
it would batter if it was 24 or 26 EP drama.

why it become 30EP because Li family V Wu family
pretty much early on we know there will be Li family V Wu family dynamic, i thought drama would take much dipper in this dynamic but they didnt, as many other drama they dont even touch Wu Zetian. not only Wu Zetian, I find in C drama they do not want to touch any ruler like Wu Zetian, Emperor Taizong and other.

flashback and plot TWIST
for audience, production pretty much relied on dramatic scenes, plot TWIST and flashback. and we should remember what ever it is DRAMA or MOVIE flashback always work as a DUCT TAPE

many bad plot TWIST and unnecessary flashback had throw out drama, I will only mention few scenes from EP18-26.
Hai Yi Ping plot was long time coming. but enter plot was feels like a forded entry, not like previous one, no matter what it has to happened so it happened, and his fall like he was nobody, he might be not Li Zong Xu but he was not nobody.
in Hai Yi Ping plot 2 flashback was completely unnecessary. 1 is Lu Dan Xin's flashback 2nd in Hai Yi Ping integration scene Ye Ping An's 1st flashback scene.
many people can say Lu Dan Xin's flashback was important one. but dialogue between and acting of Liu Shi Shi and Xuan Lu were more emotional then that flashback, and flashback was a interruption of that emotion.
Ye Ping An's 1st flashback scene in Hai Yi Ping integration scene why it was there.
Hai Yi Ping plot gives a very powerful pure human emotional scene when Xuan Lu stab Li Zong Xu.

production able to cast vatarian actors for all important character. this is one of reason why they able to make fantastic drama from a with very linear story.
it might be just me, I find Ye Ping An flat, plane and linear character. only very few vatarian actress can pull of this type character and they can afford to take the risk. and Liu Shi Shi did fantastic job.

in the end
I might have give this drama 6.5 or 7 or 7.5 if not for cinematography, editing, music and cast.

one more thing this drama may be subject to severe censorship. so production edit it in this way. and many scene has to cut lose,

make one understand without flashbacks is Screenwriter job, what are you saying it seem Screenwriter did a dull job, or Screenwriter had a easy way out, screen write is a difficult job.

what ever important or not, it is too many, it seem like they had nathing to show so they put some flashbacks to fill the gap.

i am not talking to compere between Hidden Love and First Frost. Hidden Love is on drama and First Frost a other drama,

editing, cinematography make it much more sad and gloomy.
in a drama charecter life can be depressing and hopeless but do not take it to like they are professional sad people.

too much sad and gloomy tone, but way story going it's not supposed to have this much sad and gloomy tone, each time i see ML and FL it seem like they are professional sad people. or Dementor from Harry Potter suck there joy of life.

people around Yuan Shao Cheng dyeing like fleas, i said myself ok, but when last one died i said myself oh GOD we're going to see neither TWIST. for a good twist timing is every thing. and it was a GOOD TWIST.
