The series pretty much follows the novel exactly. Unlike other dramas where they divert from the novel, this drama pretty much follows it, even the script. They just add little bits to spice it up here and there. Like the scene where SS threw some beads/balls to stumble the 3rd princess, that wasnt in the novel.
On the novel, the empress did ask SS to leave the palace. But Empress forgave her and she got back quickly. And…
She didnt order the 5th princess to leave. She sent yellow guards for her. And she left the 5th princess to wait for punishment.

CSS innocently said it wasnt her... But 5th princess accidentally let it slip that she knows CSS is taking revenge because she pushed her in the water... Hence, LBY found out... and got mad at CSS for not telling her... LBY got mad and is on point in his argument on the novel.. [posting on comment below their conversation in the novel]

LBY asked their names and family details. He punished the girls' father and brothers instead... So those girls will think twice and be scared of doing it again since their family is implicated. Those fathers and brothers were also demoted on their position. (this was the first part of the ep37 preview)
Ep38 it shows LBY being punished for what he did to the brothers and fathers... Well the emperor really couldnt care less about those. This was all for show.. But the beating was real.
