Seems like you do understand the criticism though?
Because a lot of these criticisms don't make sense in a genre that caters to such plots exactly, if it's a drama in a romcom genre--it doesn't need to be truly unique. A lot of kdramas including King The Land, Fight For My Way, Whats Wrong With Secretary Kim, Weightlifting Fairy have not exactly been unique but the staple for this genre is warmth, comfort and slice-of-life plots and they are also the ones that are celebrated. If you want something unique, romcom is not exactly the genre for you.
Not every drama can be like My Royal Nemesis but that too isn't strictly romcom, its historical and fantasy added. My point is, if you come to a genre like romcom you need to sit through tropic and character-oriented plots which aren't necessarily unique but if well-made can still go a long way to be a good romcom.
One criticism I understand well and kinda agree with-- the one I read about the webtoon character being overweight and not retained in the story for beauty conventions but then again thats just how the industry is, I guess. It likes to pretend that overweight people don't exist in this world.

Ahh this makes sense--would have liked if they had revealed some of this a bit earlier because it makes it confusing why she doesnt have powers or spirit energy like the rest. Also I saw epi 6 and know exactly why she is being hidden this way--didnt see the twist of her being the divine tree coming
So am really enjoying this one but as someone fairly new to Xianxia (having only seen LITC), I am a bit confused about one thing: is Xiao Bang Chui a mortal (think it was mentioned in epi 1 or 2) so how does she have spirit energy or powers? They also mention in epi 4 that her spirit meridians need to be repaired but how and when did they actually break?

Oh I love his works: been watching his projects for a while especially loved him in Reply! Tbh romcom is one genre that shouldn't be messed with too much because its these shows we flock to for comfort.

its supposed to be positive because these are the exact things which attracted me to kdramas more than a decade ago: why is it bad to have something that is well-made, slice of life, warm, familiar and makes you feel swoony? oh I am sorry, I want to feel butterflies, comfort and warmth when I see a romcom (which is btw what that genre is about)! And why should I remove my personal input from anything when its my viewing experience???

Exactly! Not everything you watch has to be some life-changing story with complex plots. As a burnt out grad student, I related so well to the FL and throughly felt like the outside noise had shut off while I was watching the epi!
I dont get any of the criticism over this drama: it's just your cute, feel-good, butterflies inducing slice of life. Yes its a conventional romcom but at the end of the day, when I am sad or doing terribly I will always choose a conventional but well-made romcom over a drama with a diff plot that does a 100 things. I prefer comfort, familiarity, warmth, and that feeling that kdramas induced back in 2016. Thats what this drama is--dont go in expecting something hugely unique, go in expecting comfort, warmth and an utterly hot Seo In Guk clad in sharp suits.

They should have made it clearer honestly because even the google answer is inaccurate: they weren't walking into the wilderness with their daughter, they were alone. Emperor Xiao You could be a possibility but why would he wear the general's armour?
