The ML is a good-intentioned person, who sees the goodness in the world. He has his innocence- which is reflected in that smile. It's part of the plot- to showcase the after effects of what happens to him later on.
If you start watching this drama expecting it to be a case-study on war and its after effects on a population, you will be disappointed. If you are expecting a serious drama with super complex characters and super complex plots, you will still be disappointed. What it is, is essentially a drama of a couple of Chinese fellows working in different fields in a fictional country. And the main plot of the Drama is the LOVE between two persons who go through a lot, and the focus is not on everyone's suffering.. It focuses on them. 90% on them. I think once you get into the drama knowing this, you will manage your expectations better.
Finally done watching 7 episodes, I like how they have stayed true to the novel for the most part. I am happy with the pacing of the plot so far, it makes me keen for the next episodes. Chen Zheyuan and his expressive eyes are drawing me in. 😍 The chemistry is also chemistry-ing.

I know her from Lighter and Princess. She was so cute in that.. And the chemistry was amazing between her and Chen Feiyu. Both her and Chen Zheyuan have not disappointed in bringing on chemistry with co actors.. So very excited about this drama.
