This slice-of-life drama "Go Ahead" explores broken families coming together, as two fathers and three friends gradually form a close-knit family, brought together by the absence of mothers—whether through loss or abandonment. With a wonderful cast, especially Tan Songyun, Song Weilong, and Zhang Xincheng, the drama follows their journey from adolescence into adulthood, offering a realistic portrayal of the everyday challenges, struggles, and experiences that families must endure to survive and thrive.
I found Ling Xiao’s mother particularly psychotic because of her selfishness, irrational behavior, and delusional expectations. After walking away from her family and abandoning her responsibilities as a mother, she later expected her son to take care of her as though she had never failed him or abandoned him. Her actions were unfair & irrational, and she placed an enormous emotional burden on Ling Xiao, making his life and relationships even more complicated. We see that certain action from some parents can leave a negative, unwanted lasting impression on children. Conversely, positive role models will give children the calm, safe space for kids as shown from the fathers' responsible roles.
One of the aspects I appreciated most was the family dynamic between the two fathers and the three children. Both fathers wholeheartedly embraced their parental responsibilities, taking on the roles of both mother and father while navigating the everyday challenges of raising children, managing family problems, and supporting one another through difficult times. Their dedication, patience, and unconditional love showed that a family does not have to fit the traditional mold to be a loving and supportive one.
Overall, this drama delivers a compelling storyline, excellent performances, and a heartfelt portrayal of family, friendship, sacrifice, and personal growth. Watching the characters grow from teenagers into adults makes their experiences feel all the more authentic and relatable. It is a touching and memorable journey into the lives of people who, despite their painful pasts and personal struggles, learn to lean on one another to live their lives. Their stories and relationships are the kind that stay with you long after the drama ends.
