Yup. There were quite a few timeskips between ep 5 and 6. Kohei and Taichi reconciled sometimes after summer break of their first year (~October). Then they camp and spend new year's in January together. At the end of the episode they are second years handing out society flyers at orientation (April). Maya (the girl) is a new first year student from how she calls Kohei "senpai".

If I recall correctly Taichi didn't attend lessons at all in the manga, so Maya's criticism of him is actually very sensible even if harsh.

The movie is equivalent to ep1-5 of the series, just less detailed. You can watch it to compare the adaptations but the basic plot structure is similar.

I mean, although it opened with that rain scene to create intrigue, every episode thus far has highlighted Kohei's life as a disabled person, whether it's his daily activities, his regular health checkups, or his reactions to being othered socially. It's mostly presented in his perspective too. Not saying that I particularly like the opening scene (I think it's unnecessary padding), but you're really worried over nothing. The source material is well-researched and they have stayed true to its essence so far.

As for why Taichi is different from Kohei's own mother: it's because Taichi is in the hearing world that he wants to be a part of, that he believes he will lose access to if he becomes fully deaf. His mother, though also hearing, is a family member who will be a part of his life no matter what. Majority of people need friends and social interactions to have a fulfilling life.

Vol 2 is a pretty good stopping point (they get together), so I wouldn't call it an "open ending". Like how you wouldn't call Cherry Magic's ending "open" even though that manga is also ongoing.

I know right. I don't understand how people can readily accept hetero school romance manga where the couple takes 100 chapters to peck kiss but start complaining early on when it's BL.

Cut my boy Taichi some slack?? He's poor and can barely afford meals, so naturally food is important to him. He should be able to eat whatever he likes and literally no character takes offense so why are you offended by it?

What do you mean "happy ending"? There are 12 episodes and the manga is still ongoing.

From the preview, next episode is going to be the extra chapter of vol 1, but I'm not sure if that will take up the whole episode or they'll move onto Theory of Happiness chapter 1 in the latter half. If it's the former, I'm not sure if they'll have room to adapt vol 2's extra chapter.

Yes, it's volume 1's extra chapter. Though it's not very long so I'm wondering if they'll fill the entire episode with it or move onto volume 2. I'm personally hoping for the latter because volume 2 is longer and needs more runtime.

There should be another kiss in vol 2's camping extra. But I don't know if they'll have time to adapt that with this current pacing.

In this show's defense, it was exactly the same in the manga 😅 I wish they changed it in the adaptation, but any changes were a welcome surprise rather than an expectation for me.
