Yūichi is Taichi's mentor/supervisor at his new job. Ryu is his little brother who is Deaf and only uses sign language, whom Kohei befriends in vol 3. Ryu is a separatist and his ideology makes Kohei doubt his relationship with Taichi (I'm guessing that's why OP hates him), but at the same time he's so unapologetic and uncompromising to hearing society that through their friendship Kohei comes to see that not being able to hear isn't inherently negative.

Yes, many people claim she is "lazily written" or "typical BL girl" because she's mean but that's actually what makes her a GOOD female character. She's not pure evil nor a saint; she has flaws that are a very common human experience and it also gives her room to develop as a character.

I rewatched the scene you mentioned and she doesn't even hear what Yoko says, actually. She says she simply guesses what he's asking. If you rewatch the scene again you can see Taichi turning to Yoko slightly before she does, so she's either reacting to Taichi or she can make out a sound, just not the specific words.

Kohei has actually heard Taichi calling him from behind when they're standing closer to each other and alone in a quiet environment. So they can hear, just not as well and they can't lip read

No it doesn't. Kohei isn't even the type of person who'd do that lol my boy is soft! But she does find out he's in love with Taichi and eventually is won over by Taichi and they end up having a bickering dynamic. She's never had feelings for Kohei this whole time, by the way.

I know, she's is an asshole, there's no denying that. I'm more so responding to the accusation that her character is the "cliched scheming evil BL girl" trope. She isn't the typical 2D shallow evil girl who wants to have the guy for herself; she's a flawed character who's been hurt by the world and is lashing out badly.

She isn't evil; that's just your first impression. The author depicts her as a flawed character and she is liked by majority of manga readers. That's how a good female character should be, unlike those funny fujoshi shipper girls who have no other personality trait and adds nothing to the story.

Taichi wasn't taking lessons in the manga - that's added to the adaptation for some reason. This scene is 1:1 with the manga, so yes it was about the notetaking.

This is a not very good comparison, but I see many stories on the internet about trans people with "supportive" partners who calls them by the right pronouns, but tries to convince them against getting hormones/surgery. Usually these stories make the entire trans community rage and we tell the guy to breakup with their partner. Marginalised people are more likely to end up in abusive dynamics because they want to be loved/desired. This is where Maya is coming from even though in this case she is mistaken and overly hostile.

Yes, to me this conflict isn't the typical "mean girl rival character gets in the way" drama. Maya is also a hard-of-hearing person with her own experience and perspective. Her presence shows that just because Kohei thinks what Taichi is doing is good allyship doesn't mean other hard-of-hearing people will also approve of it and find it "enough". Each person is different, and also disabled people can be assertive/blunt about their needs.

Girls don't always have to be nice and kind? This story is quite sympathetic towards Maya even though she's mean. And she's actually right about Taichi being unqualified for the notetaking job, even though she wasn't the appropriate person to tell him.

The series adapts further than the movie, so you don't have to worry about that. The movie content is equivalent to eps 1-5 of the series.
