In the novel, there's a separation period that can't be helped. While I don't remember clearly, I think they never really break up. It just happened that they lost communication, something that was, personally, necessary to happen. Sad and unfortunate, but it's for the better. I think their separation period took years. I just do not know if the drama will follow this.
