I understand that the writers want me to see the contentious relationship between Shen and Li Ying as interesting and complex, but I just find it irritating.

Yeah, once you understand his motivation, he's not bad.

One of my favorite scenes that shows what type of man the ML is when it comes to protecting the FL:

Yeah, I don't think they can do that here. This drama is heavily focused on the ML and FL's love story. Also, the FL is not indecisive like The Princess Royal's FL. She fell hard for the ML early, and they got engaged mid-way. Also, this ML is no cuck. He'll fight and kill for his woman. lol

No worries, I'm enjoying sharing my knowledge of the novel. lol Yes, the second male lead eventually ascends to the throne and becomes the king ( his true identity is hidden at first). The female lead does experience double amnesia. The second time she loses her memory, she forgets her time with the male lead and only recalls her identity as the mountain bandit leader, who was the male lead's mortal enemy.

When she discovered that ML wasn't her husband, she was furious. She got angrier when he proposed making amends by taking her as a concubine instead of a legal wife. She left him and went back to her home town. At this point, she still didn't have her memories yet, so going back to the 2ML wasn't an option.

She wasn't married to the 2ML. But they did have mutual feelings for each other when they lived together as bandits.

Yeah, it spoils some important stuff. But I don't care since I've already read the novel. lol

yeah, he's more aloof in the novel. lol

I hate these kind of tonal inconsistencies. They cause many people to drop out early.

This drama gives a strong "Back From The Brink" vibe. I think the plot is about to get heavier. I think the chemistry between the leads are good, but it's so cliché.

This is giving me Back From The Brink vibe. This makes me excited for future episodes! I like it when the ML and FL take turns chasing after and protecting each other.
