Recommendations for Beginners|Why Now is the Perfect Time to Watch "Xiaoyao"
1. The core isn't "mystical," but rather a story about "human nature," depicting the growth of humans and demons through choices: obsession and letting go, responsibility and self. It's grounded, evokes strong empathy, and becomes increasingly immersive the more you watch.
2. The narrative has a hook-like "time loop" structure, with foreshadowing and echoing each other. Rewatching after the finale reveals foreshadowing and connections, offering ample room for discussion.
3. The actors bring their characters to life. Tan Songyun subtly switches between three different temperaments (lively/bright/powerful), conveying emotion through her eyes and even her breathing; the supporting characters are also well-developed.
4. The visual quality Abundant real-life locations + restrained special effects; the use of negative space and contrasting warm and cool color temperatures creates a clean and restrained yet substantial atmosphere. The costumes, props, and sets withstand close-up scrutiny.
5. The emotional storyline doesn't rely on excessive sweetness, but it's warm and touching. The sweet moments come from the characters' choices leading to closer relationships; the true sense of "redemption" comes from mutual fulfillment.
6. With both critical acclaim and high viewership, "Xiao Yao"remains in the top 3 on iQiyi International 22 days after its finale. More and more people are watching it two or three times, and the discussions are getting increasingly interesting. Let's go, catch up/rewatch it, and add @谭松韵seven 's Xiao Yao to your list of favorite dramas for the year. - Mindy

This wave of fantasy dramas is finally not unrealistic! I initially started watching "Xiaoyao" because of the cast of Tan Songyun and Hou Minghao, but I was unexpectedly captivated by the plot. I watched all 40 episodes without feeling any padding. Tan Songyun's portrayal of Xiao Yao is so endearing. She's not a naive and innocent character, but rather clever and insightful. Her half-human, half-demon setting creates a sense of contrast, and her actions in venturing into the Valley of Ten Thousand Demons and solving strange cases are both cool and adorable. She perfectly captures the purity of being "not swayed by desires." Hou Minghao's Hong Ye is even more of a surprise. His silver hair and black robe look is both handsome and cool, exuding both the domineering aura of a demon king and the brokenness of being betrayed. His interactions with Xiao Yao, from mutual testing to joining hands, are a sweet and bittersweet story, with amazing chemistry between them.
The supporting cast is equally impressive. Zhao Liying's cameo as the Broken Dream Immortal Lord, though brief, exudes a powerful presence, her gentle exterior masking a madman within, leaving a lasting impression. Jin Shijie's portrayal of the emperor, with greed written all over his face, showcases the veteran actor's unwavering presence. There's also the loyal black and white cat demon, and the deeply obsessive Bingzhu—each character leaves a lasting impression.
The plot avoids the clichéd fantasy genre, exploring the power struggles and desires hidden behind the Jade Spring. The episodic detective storytelling format is both engaging and enriches the world-building, seamlessly weaving together plot points from the Lantern Village mystery to palace secrets. Most importantly, it feels grounded in reality, devoid of fantastical special effects. The real-life locations of the Ten Thousand Demon Valley are breathtaking, perfect for wallpapers. The conflict between humans and demons also subtly reflects the insatiable nature of human desire.
Overall, the series is brimming with sincerity. Xiao Yao's purity resolves a century-old feud and helps Hong Ye rediscover his true self, ultimately understanding that true freedom isn't about immortality or power, but about preserving inner peace. It's so good you'll want to watch it while eating, and it's addictive too! - M debunker
