A really good drama. I’d give it an 8.5/10.Unfortunately, I found the final arc quite average, mostly because…
I just wanted to share my perspective on your analysis — I actually agree with most of what you said. But I think it’s important to also consider the stages Zhang Hai went through and his nature as a big risk-taker. It felt a bit like a game, with each new arc being a tougher boss level.
Zhang Hai spent a lot of time studying the Marquis and was well-prepared for him. But the moment he discovered there were two more enemies in play, it completely threw him off his game. The next stage with the eunuch was unpredictable, but thanks to his risk-taking nature, he managed to scrape through.
By the time he reached the final villain, things were nearly impossible to control. Especially because one of his closest allies turned out to be the informant feeding information to the final enemy. It left Zhang Hai in a position where he had to rely more on instinct and luck than careful planning — because the final villain could anticipate, and literally see, his every move.
ZH even mentions in one of the episodes that the most dangerous enemy is one hiding in the dark, knowing everything about you, while you know nothing about them. And despite countless obstacles, he still managed to figure out who the third villain was. In that sense, I feel the story closed all its loops well. It’s a very realistic approach too — not everything in life can be perfectly planned. Sometimes you need a bit of luck along with bold risks.
Totally agree with you on the happy and satisfying ending. I honestly didn’t expect it for such a tension-filled story, but it was a great payoff.
Thinking of starting this. I watched Legend of Zhang Hai, and someone recommended this to be as good. Anyone agrees? Please tell me without spoilers what I can look forward to?
I thought he'll get into an accident and there will be some plot here. But, God! This is a pointless telling of a story with no substance. I am all for the actress not wanting to do intimate kiss scenes, but why cast her in a drama like this!! In actuality, this story should be giving more intense intimacy
WHAT A BRILLIANT WATCH! I’m really happy with how it ended. I kept wondering, Zhang Hai figured out who the real third culprit was, so why wasn’t he thinking ahead? Why did he keep failing at every turn? Then it hit me! This is closer to reality. Most dramas have leads who outsmart villains at every step, but Zhang Hai stumbled, made mistakes, and still found his way through.
And that final move — deceiving the villain with the actual truth? So satisfying! Honestly, I enjoyed that moment the most.
The fam dinner is a sign of 'calm before the storm' When the couple promise each other to leave together after all this, is when I know something's gonna go terribly wrong...
Ep 31-32, brilliant! My expectations have reached a new level! Better have a banging ending for all the hype they've created around the masked man and the third culprit.
I was not expecting any kisses in this series, but what a pleasant surprise! And the kiss was not disappointing at all for a historical, political revenge drama. I found the bite + kiss intense and romantic. Love 'em!! HaiTu <3
Episodes 29–30 were such a sigh of relief! Zhang Hai and Antu’s love for each other is so deep, it gave me chills. And the queen’s story… I was crying like I’d lost someone in my own life. So many emotions packed into these two episodes — beautiful, heartbreaking, and unforgettable.
