One of The Best Wuxia Drama I have Seen
Positive Points
1. This drama is a dark Wuxia drama and one of my favorites. The best part of this drama is its complex characters. None of the characters is simple and straight, and yet they feel realistic. This drama was a bit lengthy, and a few parts sometimes feel a bit draggy, but this journey was totally worth it. The story was written well. The special effects were outdated, as this is an old drama, but the story and acting totally compensate for its visuals.
2. The cast was probably one of the best I have seen in a Chinese drama. All of them probably gave the best performance of their careers. The story was brought to life through this talented cast. Zhao Liying was so good in her portrayal of Chu Qiao. Unfortunately, this also raised my standard for actresses portraying a female general/military official in Chinese dramas. If the acting and body language are not right, I absolutely can't stand them.
3. Music, direction, and production were all also good and grand according to the standards of the time it was made. It was a very well-written drama that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Negative Points
1. The decision not to shoot both seasons together and ending the 1st season on a cliffhanger proved to be costly due to the plagiarism issue. I was thoroughly disappointed with the ending. They should have made it a 1 season drama. Furthermore, Chu Qiao's backstory was too little in the 1st season. There were also a few draggy moments. This drama could have been wrapped up nicely within 60 episodes.
Despite the abrupt ending, this drama is undoubtedly a must-watch due to its brilliant cast and even more brilliant story and complex characters.
