Newtopia: A Refreshing Take on the Zombie Genre
When you start a zombie drama, what comes to mind first? Action, thrill, gore, chills… zombies? Duh! Okay, okay, so the usual, right? But hear me out—what if I told you this show delivers comedy, romance, gruesome gore, absurdity, some weird camera work, and, of course, zombies? Ahem.Unlike the majority of folks here, I LOVED this show from the very beginning. Some say the first episode was boring, some say the first two, and some say the first three. But in my opinion, the show was NEVER boring. Let me clear up any doubts—*clears throat*—as I mentioned earlier, we all have certain expectations from specific genres. When a show doesn’t align with those expectations, disappointment kicks in, and some might even feel 'rebellious' enough to express their dislike toward the ENTIRE thing.
Now, back to MY opinion. Yes, the first episode was slow, but let’s be real—when you start a show, it has to set the plot first. We need to understand the characters and their personalities, especially since Newtopia has a different setting compared to typical zombie dramas. It actually has a story—two lovers separated by a zombie apocalypse. And to feel invested in that, we first need to connect with them.
Three episodes in, and I was already enjoying the absurdity of the situation and laughing at the sheer stupidity of the soldiers. From the fourth episode onward, the pace picks up, and we get to see what this show is truly capable of. The train scene, the costume scene, the chainsaw, the cinematography, the chemistry between Alex, Youngjoo, and Tripeater, the duo of Jaeyoon and Ra In-ho, THE Aron Park, the eyeball scene, the eyeball scene 2.0, my badass Soo Jong-ssi and her simp—there are so many moments I want to talk about, but I fear this review will turn into a car magazine (as if it’s not already long enough—ahem).
And to those judging the acting—please, judge with good judgment because right now your judgement is not judging(my brainrotted brain took over, excuse me). Saying Jisoo’s acting is terrible is just plain unfair. She did a GOOD job with what was required for this role. I’ll admit it’s not the best, but it was good enough, thank you very much!
Overall, I loved this show for what it was, and trust me, it’s best enjoyed without comparisons. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go touch grass because I’m banging my head against the wall—I miss my Friday evenings with a 45-minute episode of "Newtopia".

A solid 10! Some dramas don't need logic and critical analysis to be perfect, they just come at certain phase of your life and it complements everything so well, you overlook the flaws. This drama does the same to me.I have been listening to the ost of this drama in loop for weeks now and i can't help but feel a bit nostalgic at the intro part and i don't even know why.
