A Promising Cast, but a Miscast Lead

As a big fan of Choi Hyun-wook and his previous dramas, I had high hopes for this series. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a real disappointment.
The drama follows classic, overused patterns, which isn’t necessarily a flaw, but when the story lacks credibility, it becomes a serious problem. And here, that’s exactly what happens.

Overall, the casting is decent. But why cast Choi Hyun-wook as a company CEO? From the start, it just doesn’t feel right. Some might say you eventually get used to it… I didn’t. He still looks like a high school student; seeing him as the head of a company simply isn’t believable. As a regular employee, maybe, but not as a boss.

On top of that, the soundtrack and the story are quite bland. Nothing really stands out. The "geek" side of the main character, which he awkwardly tries to hide, felt more cringey than endearing. There were so many better and deeper themes they could have explored.

In the end, I couldn’t even finish the series. And those are the reasons why.

A Masterfully Crafted Series Where Emotions Blend Perfectly

This is exactly the kind of series I love. It blends several themes — high school life, humor, action, sadness, and romance — a risky challenge, because when not perfectly balanced, it can quickly make the story feel unrealistic and tedious.
Here, the series walks that fine line… but it's precisely this delicate balance that, in my opinion, makes it so special.

Right from the start, the story is clear, with an effective setup that immediately establishes the tone: a blend of action and high school life.
The director skillfully brings each theme to life. Humor, action, romance, and sadness naturally complement each other without one overwhelming the others. The emotional impact builds steadily, particularly in the final episodes: the revelation about the main character’s father and the deep bonds formed among the students create a genuine sense of brotherhood.
When the protagonist eventually leaves the school, the farewell scenes are genuinely moving, showing just how well the relationships and characters have been developed.

Another strength is the way romance is handled: it’s always kept in the background, never taking center stage. Only once the main story concludes does the romance finally step forward, offering a gentle and fitting closure to the series.

Lastly, the casting brings real strength to the show, notably with the powerful comeback of Seo Kang-joon, whose performance is particularly compelling.

In the end, this series succeeds brilliantly in bringing together multiple themes, making it a truly memorable and accomplished work.

When Emotion Finds the Perfect Balance

This series had never really tempted me, but on a friend's recommendation, I finally decided to watch it… and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised.
The setup is particularly well-executed: every character contributes something meaningful to the progression of the story. The flashbacks are used effectively, whether to explore the lives of Geu-ru and his uncle Sang-gu, or to add depth to the deceased characters.
Geu-ru’s autism further enhances the emotional dimension of his story. His difficulty in expressing emotions makes him incredibly touching without ever falling into excessive pathos.
Each subplot is carefully crafted. The series also manages to insert perfectly measured touches of humor, never intrusive, which never alter the main atmosphere — a rare and precious balance.
The same goes for the fight scenes: unlike some Korean productions where the action can become over-the-top, here everything remains credible and serves the narrative.
My only regret concerns the character of Sang-gu. His relationship with the family, especially with his brother, deserved to be explored in greater depth.
Finally, the ending felt a bit rushed. An epilogue projected into the future, showing how Geu-ru and his uncle had evolved, would have been a beautiful way to conclude this story with even more emotion.

A Sequel Carried by Attachment, Held Back by Its Flaws

Season 1 played a huge role in making us emotionally attached to the characters and, as a result, helped us appreciate this second season even more. Without that attachment, some weaknesses would have certainly been more noticeable. That said, Season 2 remains generally effective, even if it suffers from a few inconsistencies. The fight scenes are prioritized over story coherence at times, which weakens the dramatic intensity.
Nonetheless, certain moments, especially when Si-eun speaks to Su-ho while he’s in a coma, add a real sense of nostalgia. These emotionally charged exchanges strongly remind loyal fans of the impactful moments from the first season.

The biggest disappointment lies in the ending: Su-ho’s long-awaited awakening is rushed, leaving a sense of incompletion after so much anticipation. On top of that, Beak Jin’s death is handled almost incomprehensibly when it happens, making the scene even more frustrating. It hints at a possible Season 3, but given that the webtoon has been fully adapted, I doubt it.

As for the characters, Season 2 introduces several strong additions. I especially appreciated the introduction of new friends around Si-eun. My personal favorite wasn’t Hu-min "Baku" — although he made a strong impression — but rather Hyeon-Tak. His character reminded me of Su-ho: not as technically skilled, but with the same strong social presence. He brings a lot of humanity and courage to the story.
Finally, Jun-tae shows significant development: he gains confidence and manages to push himself beyond his limits thanks to the group's support, further strengthening the emotional bond with this new dynamic of friendship.

My ratings for Weak Hero Class alone are admittedly not very objective due to how attached I am to the series — but at least this review is.

A Surprising Experience Despite Some Flaws

Strangely enough, I had heard a lot of negative opinions about this series — which doesn’t really match the relatively high rating it has on the app.
In my case, I actually enjoyed it. Yes, it has its flaws, but overall, the experience remains very positive. So let's start with the good points.
The casting is spot-on. Choosing actors who are usually known for playing villains and giving them roles as everyday, kind-hearted people was a clever decision — one I fully support.
The atmosphere and color grading, shifting beautifully between warm and cool tones, are major strengths. The pacing, with its well-managed variations, keeps the story engaging.
Another big positive: the attention given not just to the main couple, but also to the secondary one — and especially to the relationship between the main character and his brother, which I believe was one of the emotional cores of the series. It’s precisely these kinds of relationships that allow viewers to connect deeply with the characters.
As for the flaws, without listing them all, I would say the biggest issue lies with the main character's emotional expressions. Perhaps it was a directorial choice, but to me, it didn’t work — he sometimes came across as dumb, or even borderline psychotic at times, which felt a bit awkward.
There were also a few slow moments that disrupted the otherwise good rhythm of the series, though they weren't too damaging overall.
In conclusion, while the series has noticeable imperfections, its strong points largely make up for them. Thanks to the well-chosen cast, the emotional relationships, and the thoughtful direction, it offers a viewing experience that’s both touching and memorable.
