I really hope you don't mind spoilers.
In the end, Lan Yu dies (the student). As far as I remember they didn't mention in the movie (idk about the novel) how he died, but there's the last scene at the end where Han Dong was driving by Beijing and he says something along the lines "whenever I drive past the site you had the accident, I stop", so I assume it was a work accidental death.
The movie was great overall, but I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea.
But I do agree that Lan Yu's death was unnecessary 😭 after everything, he deserved a peaceful life 😭
