I'm hoping it won't be so obvious like that. I think XY is trying to prove to herself and to others that she is doing everything for love, which makes the gifts unfavourable to her. SHM knows the truth and I think he does have feelings for her, but his personality is that he has bought this wonderful, scheming partner and he must 'pay' her to be at his side, he uses the transactions to justify their relationship because he doesn't want to or doesn't know how to reciprocate the love she shows him, or maybe he is trying to ignore the love and insists on using the gifts to say to himself that she is using him for the money.
I think the story has changed its primary narrator/pov and it seems like we'll be exploring SHs side of the story…
I am convinced that he saw XY and how she handles situations- when she researched him, learned about the plants and potting, schemed a CV to get close to him - and thought that she would be a good tool at his side. So he tested her with his mother - and even though he knew she was making her life up, she was passing the test and proving herself and that is why he decided to keep her at his side.
