A Promising Concept Trapped in an Outdated Melodrama
Don’t Be Too Emotional began with an appealing premise: a dangerously attractive senior who warns others not to become emotionally attached to him, and a sincere young man who gradually discovers the person hidden behind that intimidating image.
Unfortunately, the series never made full use of that concept. Jane was introduced as a charismatic, almost devilish figure, but the story gradually softened him without exploring enough of his complexity. Gemini’s amnesia, the family conflict, the herbal medicine shop, Dan’s obsession and the revenge plot kept the drama moving, yet many developments felt repetitive and overly convenient.
The final episode brings back Gemini’s memories, restores his relationship with Jane and even allows him to become a successful manga artist. Just when everything appears settled, the story adds one last kidnapping, confrontation and shooting. Dan’s motive is finally explained, but his actions remain difficult to sympathize with—especially since he repeatedly harms the very person he claims to love.
The leads have enough chemistry to make their relationship watchable, and Jane’s obvious happiness after Gemini remembers him is genuinely sweet. However, the series relies too heavily on familiar melodramatic devices and leaves several characters and conflicts underdeveloped.
I watched all twelve episodes, but I was left thinking that the “devilishly charming senior” premise could have produced a much more exciting and distinctive drama.
