Yeli's feelings toward MXY are pretty complicated. here some thoughts
He saved her in the desert when she was being robbed by bandits, and that's when she first started taking an interest in him
She keeps saying that her mother owed MXY family something. what if the person who lost the imperial edict was actually Yeli's mother? that could explain why Yeli feels responsible and wants to repay that debt on her mother's behalf
She also promised MXY's brother before execution that she would save him. that's probably why she's so determined to heal MXY's leg as quickly as possible. even going as far as learning the "leg healing" medicine herself
What if Yeli is scared of monkeys because there were monkey statues all around the Lishan people graveyard? She gets so overwhelmed by fear that she ends up biting her own arms, even had a scar

The second is that it was a massacre. During the lockdown, something could have gone terribly wrong and someone decided the Lishan people needed to be wiped out. Maybe it was ordered by someone powerful, like the Empress Dowager
