Yes I know, which is why I said disappointed but not surprised. And that DYX is not a selfish actor. Instead of a risk-free, mainstream, commonly avaliable ml role, he's playing this kind of deeply grounded role instead. If audience can't see the nuance of it, its their problem and not the character's.

Personally could care less about popularity and hype. Zhao Ling is incredibly gentle and it's been established many times through little things since the beginning. It's not like he falls under the "his cold heart softened for fml so he's doing everything for her and being a doormat" trope that he'd be called a simp.
He killed so that his men wouldn't have to, he lied and smuggled so that his people would have food on the table, he didn't want his young apprentice to get his hands dirty with blood no matter the danger and took it on himself coz he wanted him to live a normal dignified life. He distributed his valuable ground snow for free to the poor by turning them into brine so the rich wouldn't be able to turn in into another business. He yearned for a family but never married outta concern for his future wife's livelihood and status. He cherished life, feared death and valued his relationships instead of considering them transactional.
He avoids making enemies if he can, he doesn't hold grudges and even his revenge never sacrifices his innate morals or overlook the big picture. When one of his men tried to kill him he didn't execute him to set an example despite not knowing him long and got to the core of why. When one of his longest companion, someone he trusted like a brother betrayed him, despite being heartbroken he accepted his reasoning with grace and was tough enough to make a clean break with him after settling accounts. He has always been a deeply affectionate, honorable and responsible man. If he gives his word, he keeps it. He knows when to choose his battles and when to not, and avoids unnecessary risks coz it's not just his own life on the line.
Fml also being smart quickly identified this trait of his as both his biggest strength and softest weakness. Which is why she could utilize it to keep him with her and have him rise, not from bad intentions but because she chose him. Coz despite having to live a gritty life of smuggling and illegal activities due to his circumstances, he was more humane, trustworthy and honorable than anyone else out there.
When fml first proposed the idea of getting royal envoys help to get him outta his fugitive status he wasn't paying it any heed until she brought up that A-Sen and him would no longer need to hide and run, you could see it in his expression. But he didn't go with it coz his life experiences made him wary and distrustful to take such risks from people in high power so fml forced his hand. There is no simp here nor any weak ml, just a really beautiful one.
Small brained c-drama viewers have gotten so used to Gary Stu type ML's that when an actually well written, street smart but kindhearted and relatable ML shows up, they can't handle it. Disappointed but not surprised. Didn't want to word it this way but this continuous nonsense is getting irritating. Thank God DYX isn't a selfish actor and knows how to set himself apart from the billion all powerful/cold/ruthless/mastermind ML's out there by bringing such a nuanced, gritty, complex and grounded ML to the table.
Deng enxi mentioned in their live stream that the scene in which he catches the cup it was ding yuxi's idea to…
He's always screwing himself over to make things more realistic for us, his hand had gotten all red. I don't know how to feel about that but RESPECT!! 😭😭💝❤️🩹
Guys, I need some spoilers. What’s the background of ML? Is he just a commoner with no background or anything?…
That's right. He's a street smart rich commoner with shady salt business. I'm sure we will get more backstory about him and how he ended up here in this work or his life but it's not gonna be about some hidden royal, general, noble heir identity if that's what you were wondering.
for the chastity gates here's a good explanation :)https://www.reddit.com/r/CDrama/comments/1vk1cpv/comment/p2qkzws/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Oh thank you for this. I was looking for an explanation
Ikr, when we were watching during premiere and the next few hours it was a much nicer comments section with people…
It's so annoying honestly like I come back after some 7 hours and find the nice comments section became a breeding ground for stupid complaints like screentime, age gap, whether it's fml centric or not, who is getting used for what etc and no one is talking about the drama or characters themselves anymore.
