M9 might be a prequel or a parallel timeline I'm not sure, coz you saw Zhang Qishan and some of the leaders here around ep18, 19 right? He's all established here but in M9, he's the mc. It's also a republican era mystery and one of the best dmbj adaptation as I heard. So you would have a easier time watching if you start with it after this drama.

The main storyline of dmbj i.e, lost tomb are all set in the modern era featuring its own cast of main characters called the iron triangle. You can see one of them, wu xie making a cameo appearance at the end of Archives when you finish it. He was reading and recording the case files of our Zhang trio we saw here in the drama. Southern Archives was the overseas branch of the Zhang family many decades before wu xie's story started. Zhang qiling is a mc in the main storyline too. In the comment below user Alice listed out all the adaptation names.

Don't worry me and many others haven't read the books nor watched any dramas from tomb raiding universe too. This drama in particular can easily be watched as a standalone.

But if you wanna know then yes, it's a side story or prequel set many decades before the main "Daomu Biji" or "Grave Robber Chronicles" universe. It's a huge franchise with around 12 novels or so and many of them got cdrama or movie adaptations over the years, with varying levels of audience reception. Every adaptation usually uses a different set of actors so it can break immersion if someone finds having same casts important.

The author himself was the scriptwriter for 'Archives: The Nanyang Mystery' and was heavily involved in the production so you can rest easy about it. For instance, if you watch The Mystic Nine (2016), you will find some familiar names from here since it tells the story of Zhang Qishan and his team. Mystic Nine S2 is finally coming out in a couple of weeks after 10 years. So if you wanna start with the dmbj dramas after this, then M9 and it's sequel can be a good place to start.
