Thank you for saving me from watching the rest of this drama. I've been trying to find something japanese to watch,…
Hi Selbee, I'm glad the review was useful to your decision.
I have the same problem as you, which is why I tend to not look for Jdramas anymore. There are some watchable ones, but all of them suffer from the same issue of being male-centric. At best they relegate the FL to a supporting character, at worst they treat them as props (this coming from my limited viewing experience with Jdramas).
If there's one I can recommend, it would be "Switched".
Nice review! Well put. My sister kept telling me to watch this after we watched Squid Game together. She'd been…
Thanks! I did watch Squid Game and I actually prefer it a lot more. I think SQ and this one are more similar (in terms of concept only --meaning, that it's a game with your life at stake) vs Sweet Home (which came around the same time as Alice and were much more compared during the time of launching).
From the latter two, I still preferred Sweet Home a lot more. Had I watched SW before Alice, I think my review would've been harder on this show since I would be comparing them. Of course, by the same logic, I enjoyed SH more precisely because I watched it after getting disappointed with this show (and since they were often compared, my expectations for SH were pretty low which would've also contributed to the pleasant surprise I got once I watched it).
BTW, I do think SQ is a better comparison with Alice than SW. Because while the "survival of the fittest/smartest" rule applies to to SH, that's really where the similarities end. I think SH is it's own concept but, refreshingly, it had a more balanced cast of male/female characters who were actively involved in the plot progression (which is something I really care about).
Meanwhile, All of us Are Dead would be a better counterpart of Sweet Home. And, in that respect, the latter is still superior to the former by a long shot.
"why they didn't realize Nam Ra could just walk within a zombie horde without getting attack. "Cause no one would…
100% agree. I detest when characters are given too much power and then, in order to still have drama, they just have them not use their power. Why give it in the first place then?
I also hated that most male characters had deaths that stretched out to show some kind of courageous act. While female characters were quickly killed and/or transformed. Even the teacher, who at least died while saving that other student, had a quick transformation. Meanwhile, there were at least three guys that I remembered who died keeping zombies at bay, lol (the guy in the gym, the guy who got stabbed, the FL's father. And you can argue that in the police station you had the scientist also keeping zombies from attacking the detective. Even the guy with the arrows at least put up a fight before dying).
Meanwhile, one of the girls got killed while leaving her friend behind (the one who lost her parents). Then the pink sweater girl killed someone for petty reasons, got someone else killed and finally got killed herself in seconds... ML's mom who went to try and rescue her son (without a plan) got killed like a joke. But FL's dad gets to shine.
It annoyed me, because guys seem to get a ton of agency, while girls were portrayed quite lame.
Agree on all your points, especially "A fight between her and GwiNam could have been epic." I got my hopes up because I thought that's where it was heading when we saw her putting on lipstick. I was so looking forward on the confrontation between victim and bully turned zombies... and then nothing. SUCH A WASTE! I think that's the one ball they dropped that really hurt.
Also agree with the firefighter dad, I don't get why he had to sacrifice himself. And not to mention that I hated how some people turned to zombies really fast and others managed to get some heroic scenes in before they turned... like, why?
BTW, I don't get why they didn't realize Nam Ra could just walk within a zombie horde without getting attack. She could've gone to do recconnaissance and dealth with the zombies by setting them on fire or trapping them or something. Just such a wasted potential with her character.
I usually agree with your reviews, but I strongly disagree with this one. :-) I still respect your opinion immensely…
It's understandable. We each see things differently and in this case, we simply ended up seeing the same show with different eyes and expectations --which yielded an entirely different experience. :)
Great review. Ah I’m 3 episodes in, but you already confirmed a lot of what I was predicting this show to do...I…
Indeed, unfortunately, the characters never gain depth and remained feeling quite 2D, which is one of the weakest points of the show. So if you didn't feel satisfied with the first episodes, you will probably not enjoy the rest.
Interesting, I have Squid Game on my PTWL. I'll see if I can start watching it during the weekend, knowing that at least it'll be better than this show. :)
I think the ending will be rushed. There is just too much to reveal and it's episode 10. And there is not even…
I agree. Last night's episode (ep 9) felt boring to me, since there was too much emphasis on the romance and the relationship between the leads and not enough on the crime aspect (which is what hooked me in the first place). Hopefully tonight's episode will be better...
