This is soo true. I can't help but resent the emperor more and more as the episodes progress. Like you said, all he wants is someone non-threatening and dumb to reaffirm his own sense of self-worth.
Cao Danshu is worth ten of him, and he most definitely does not deserve her devotion. I can't help but ship her with Maoze..... although I know for a fact that this would never ever happen.

I saw in the trailer that he tells her everyone else belongs to the emperor, but she belongs to him (as in simply Zhao Zhen)
I felt sooo bad for Danshu after seeing that.
Poor Maoze, seems, he likes Danshu.

She really is a character that tugs at your heartstrings. You can feel her pain and longing and the way she struggles to put up a strong front and suppress her overwhelming feelings..... Kinda similar to Feng Jiu venting to Su Moye, after getting trapped in that cage ... but even more potent somehow. Maybe because Feng Jiu still had the option to look elsewhere for her happiness, but Danshu doesn't...

Watch it at your own risk. I for one wouldn't recommend it though

Her dad in the book was never this annoying...he was a really entertaining character
