Does anyone know on which period of Chinese history is the setting of this drama based? I found something about…
The story is set in the kingdom of Great Ye (大 邺). As far as I remember there were no such kingdom in real China.

I see a great bug here. Dongfang Qing Can shares all the Orchid's feelings and emotions, her sorrow, joy etc. It means he must share her love to Chang Heng. But he doesn't!. What can happen to him if she married Chang Heng? You damned Chinese censorship.

Very curious to know this- Which dynasty does AOS depicts???Their outfits and hairstyles doesn't match with others…
The story is set not in Joseon or Goryeo but in Daeho (from the Chinese Da Hu 'Great Lake"). So, it's not a period drama but pure fantasy. As to the hairstyles they are non-historic at all cause in the real Korea males always had long hair (in the topknot).

Oh, I like how well Korean can fuse their traditional historical or mythological themes with the Western culture ones. Waiting for the Season 3

Oh, here you're the only one I agree with. I think this drama is beautiful, memorable and gripping but overrated. But I disagree with feminist complaints here that it is bad cause females characters aren't very active, powerful etc. - in the story set in the ancient Asian society and based on traditional mythological plots. The problem is that the plot suffers from its new and new holes and contradictions. The magical universe of Daeho had lots of potential but the crew were in a great hurry, maybe. Also, many Korean screenwriters prefer to specialize in emotions rather than logics.

Personally, I've long since given up on expecting any consistent, logical development about how AoS works, and…
Me too, I have a feeling that the writers badly thought out the logics of their world. But we were shown in the season 1 that the Jin family magic power is literally in their blood. Other magicians’ power is of some other sort. The Chinese alchemy differs between the power of breath (qi), power for action, and the power of blood (xue), power for growth. May this be the difference between the Jin power and the other magic?

Zero

As for me I like gloomy fairy tales - like this one. There are some plot holes and slowdowns here but it was a wonderful journey. Of course, all the drama was just a backstory for the young characters, their activities as grown-up ones would be shown in the 2nd season (if it were)

i keep searching for a historical drama like this but i don't find any T_T most of them are heavily romantic and…
Queen Seon Duk and Arthdal Chronicles are made by the SFD writers (all of them have lots of power struggle, interesting antiheros and quite small romantic lines)

IMHO, the ending is essentially the same in both versions: he and she become two deities of the reserved forest, magic creatures who are out of the human world but they just take on different forms: either plants or immortals who can be seen in the mountain Taoist temple as humans

Judging by the comments there is not much romance in this? If i am more into romance driven plot i guess this…
AC has some love stories but is mostly about power. It has clever plot with multiple leads, good acting, visuals etc. but if you merely want a sweet romcom try smth else.

I agree that the second ML is just badly written. I agree that here we've got very stupid, selfish and ill-mannered FL (in the real mediaeval patriarchal society her family would merely whip her to blood and send her away to the countryside or a convent so that she would not disgrace them anymore).

But I liked the drama. Why? Because sometimes we like fairy tales about the ones who aren't smart but are just lucky. In our real life we make a lot of mistakes but we want the pple around us to forgive us and go on loving us. This drama shows us this dream of ours that is why it may be guilty pleasure to watch it.

Is it only me who can't stand the lead actor (Allen Ren) here? With his puppy face he is 100% miscast here, when playing a grown up man. I go on watching just because the historic period is interesting.

When she discovers who her master/teacher used to be... things get really dumb, really fast for the female lead.I…
>Maybe they did have some goals that weren't purely money for secrets/murder but it sure didn't seem like that.
You forget that her teacher madam Liu had saved many orphaned kids and brought them up that's why they serve her. But I agree, it doesn't justify all her blackmail and the FL just looks stupid and selfish
