I don't think you can use the transitive property in all cases, he's not a passive entity, his actions and decisions mattered too. Also, rather than comfort I see them as helping hand, an action rather than just words, something like this. As for the fact that it makes her weaker, definitely, but maybe that's what makes her happy and she's not success-oriented after all?

I'm not a fan, but big hands are actually a metaphor (that at this point is kinda annoying, since they keep on using it, but it's still not about arms as anatomical parts). Maybe they used a metaphor because his character doesn't understand those. It's ironic.
