The King: Eternal Monarch Episode 6

Until further notice, I’m dropping this. The writing is painfully sloppy and too clunky to continue! Most characters aren’t fully realized or even interesting. U Dohwan and Jeong Eunchae have the most compelling roles, but one is underutilized and the other is unlikeable. Furthermore, the chemistry between the leads is completely absent. “Goblin” is one of my all-time favorites, but I cannot help but come to the conclusion the actors—not the writing—made it special. The camaraderie betweenGong Yu and I Donguk and their ability to imbue playfulness and personality into characters made that drama magical. I still plan to give Kim Eunsuk’s future dramas a chance, but I won’t anticipate them anymore. There are far more talented and interesting writers out there whose work is more to my taste.

The story has officially started and this is the best episode so far (mainly because Jung Taeeul's screentime was minimal). The cinematography continues to impress and now the writing is improving. For me, the most glaring issue is character inconsistencies. Why is Jung Taeeul suddenly fascinated by Lee Gon’s disappearance? Why does she revisit the bamboo forest? When she receives her reissued ID card, why does she look tearful? She hates him and wanted him to leave.Next week looks promising but at this point, I’m tempering expectations. Although I’m desperate to love this one, to date I’ve only had one successful Kim Eunsuk drama—and I’ve watched six. Unfortunately, there's a real possibility this could be the drama which makes me avoid her future projects.

Sigh…after episode three, I concede I’m not loving it. I think the cinematography is beautiful and the narrative is interesting, but the casting and writing are destroying it for me. For me, the biggest problem is Kim Goeun and her character. I love her off-screen and in other projects, but this seems like a miscasting. She’s overplaying being tough instead of conveying being tough. Furthermore, I’ve watched other dramas where actresses convey being spiky and sarcastic without being hateable (Lee Dahui in Search: WWW, Jeon Yeobin in Melo is My Nature, and Kim Dami in Itaewon Class). So far, Kim Goeun’s character isn’t likable in the least and I don’t want her anywhere near Lee Gon. I cannot help but imagine this role in a different actress’s hands. For example Jeon Yeobin, Lee Dahui, Kim Dami, Lee Seol, Ryu Hyeyeong, or Lee Som. Ultimately, I don’t like or believe Kim Goeun as this character.Although her performance is an issue, how her character is written is a larger problem. I cannot understand why Jung Taeeul is written as such a violent and hostile character. I recognize Lee Gon is an inconvenience for her, but her venom is directed toward everyone and the constant threats are tedious and don’t endear her character to the audience. She just seems unreasonable and unlikeable. Also, it makes the “romance” between the leads unlikely in the extreme. Why would he jump through worlds to be near someone so odious?
