HW was always set up to be loyal to the company because of his admiration for Jin Yang Cheol. He read the memoirs and studied dutifully; he didn't care that others saw him as a servant because that book inspired him. It wasn't until he met the man face-to-face that the veneer fell. The fact that grandpa was so determined to give the company to his eldest son because of a stupid rule placed him as an enormous obstacle to remove for HW revenge. His revenge was always about getting rid of the 2nd and 3r gen who caused his death, grandpa was an obstacle to move out of the way, simple as that

They used the major plot lines of the story, to make more plausible to the mainstream audience. What works in a novel does not work in a drama. You really believe people would take a 10 -12 year old as a CEO of a hedge fund? You really wanted to be bogged down by his college years? They chose to pick what would work for a large audience and fit it in a 16 eps format without sacrificing the major plot
