I mean Shanai Marriage Honey is just a short, fluffy watch, a drama that has like 30 mins or less of runtime, so ofc the writers can't focus on each character or really go deep into things. I don't think this is representative of jdramas at all. I have watched a lot recently and I'd say that characterization and having a lot of depth is one of Japanese dramas and movies' strong points, tbh.

You just have to download the video files from the link provided and open it using VLC player or similar apps on your phone or computer. And then choose the .ass files in the subtitle options.
