I was liking the drama because the interactions between ML and FL were very sweet and they explore all the feelings of trauma, shame and victim-blaming that sexual assault survivors go through but... they place way too much emphasis on trying to humanize and redeem a literal rapist.

You should watch Battle of Changsha and see how that affects your opinion of Yangzi's acting. If it's still mostly negative, avoid her like the plague.

Battle of Changsha is a really good, if really sad WW2 drama. The Long Night has good reviews rn and is part of the same series as The Bad Kids. Kidnapping Game is also a Light On series like The Bad Kids and was honestly amazing, if a bit confusing at first. Last One Standing aka City of God is also quite decent.

Yes!! That's why I also prefer Kdramas compared to other asian dramas. It's all about the emotions.
Different people like different things, I guess. There are a lot of Western shows that are emotionally engaging and well-written with great characterization, you just have to look for them, just like with Asian dramas.
