Under the Skin Season 2: Thrilling but Lacking Depth
I am not exactly disappointed with Season 2 of Under the Skin, but I would describe it more as an entertaining and thrilling crime drama. However, the allure of Shen Yi and Du Cheng's characters is definitely absent. I was so drawn to their personalities and thought processes in the first season, but here, they seem more two-dimensional, and their chemistry as friends is practically nonexistent.
While watching the episodes, I kept thinking, What happened to you? The cases are still engaging and intriguing, but at the end of the day, it just feels like watching case after case with no real plot development for the main cast. Even in Shen Yi's storyline with the mysterious lady in red, he mentions her three or four times throughout the show, yet nothing actually happens. It feels like they bring her up just for the sake of keeping her somewhat relevant, but it ends up feeling pointless.
Shen Yi's character feels stripped down—there are almost no artistic elements in this season, and none of the revelations feel fantastic due to his ingenuity. I also found the last arc slightly confusing; I wasn't exactly sure what Shen Yi was doing, and his sudden switch-up at the end made no sense to me.
That being said, the ending was very interesting—it feels like a loop back to Season 1, and I'm intrigued to see if there will be a third and final season of Under the Skin. I would rate Season 2 an 8/10—very good, but not fantastic.
