To completely adopting the novel is unrealistic I know. But it could have been better. A novel fan from before the actual drama production and cast was even announced, compared to the expectations and wait I endured it still fell short. You can see the hype it uad created on it's novel fans the ratings tells a lot. Yes it is one of the best dramas in 2025 but it had the potential to break all costume and comedy drama legends like nirvana in fire, joy of life,lotus case book,blood of youth, i am nobody, eternal love. Especially the comedic aspect if they had presented it with the right balance of comedy, action,heroism it would have been a legend among male fans. In this industry and genre dominated by female centered dramas a male centric drama even with little 😉misogynistic elements it would have been a great drama. They tried to balance it out to conform to the social values and all gender viewers and lost the soul of the novel in that process of commercialization.
Wang hedi is a good actor, visual-10 hands down. But xu qi'an is the perfect potrayal of a gen z chinese youth. Although it was the best potryal a drama could possibly show in tv which is seen by children to elderly yet the music, production, comedy and script[compared to the novel still fell short] screen writer had to adapt to the production cost to write script that's why the frames were too dragging. The comedy aspect and rhetorics, undertones, double meanings were cut, symbolism were cut. Maybe most don't share my opinion or views but as an avid re-reader and fan of this novel the drama fell short by light years.
Although the writer have the most authority on the interpretation of the characters but readers alsohave their own interpretation based on their own understanding. So my conclusion is Although wang hedi went to the borderline as it was permitted by society, viewers and censor board of china. But when comparing tho the potrayal in novel and street smarts, personality a d modus operandi showed in the novel of xu qi an it was still stiff when seeing on screen. They could have cut the vulgar part and the cencored the inner thoughts yet could have potryaed a more playful and heroic part of xu qi an. They cut many best parts, i know the production cost yet they could have partnered with netfix or Amazon. Or like joy of life divided it into several seasons. To be honest when ever xu qian real life potrayal comes into mind only one actor's name come up that is Zhang yishan.
Don't immerse completely and after every episode do a internal a objective review. And then connect it with one another you would know why I said that. Though i understand drama is all about immersing but this drama too hyped and doesn't connect the reality and logic tenets.

Every type of major genre has it own dedicated fanbase. Xianxia's market is biggest and fan base is youngest. That's why even if the actress sometimes don't like the project they do it to not diltue the market share of that genre. But nowadays it's also on the decline.
After Bai lu and yu tong, Rounan is the best thing that is blooming in C-Drama. [Although Bai Lu last 3 drama choices were generic.] Not overdoing it, just natural. Tian xi wei tried to do it in 'In between' but failed because they are too focused on her visuals. Shen yue also tried in "Smile code" but looked artificial and repetitive the screenwriter is partially to blame. Jiang peiyao is also doing well nowadays. But Ruonan is a talented acting prospect that is showing potential, with good linear plots she will shine.
If anyone read the novel they will how much potential was wasted in this drama. It was trash!!! Dylan wang couldn't potray the playful yet a just character by any means not even close to the Xu Qi'an. Nor by acting, script or dialog delivery. He was too stiff for the character. it needed someone with the playfulness like "Wei Xiaobao" and moral compass like "Ning Que." Yes the plot was changed for its novels vast content but they cut out the best "Yunzhou Arc" The investigation and Qi'an's death was epic in the novel. With a bit a better casting, music, sound effects, cinematography and a good makeup crew it could have beaten the ratings chart of "Netflix" internationally and given a better exposure to the world than "Nirvana of fire" or "Eternal love."
Everything fitted the plot, the actors, screenwriting only the inspector Oh's lines were a little bit overdramatic and corny at the beginning. And the female inspector casting was the only stain of this first acting dialogue delivery is very stiff and amateurish. And visual look like a gangnam club going lady rather than a elite police officer with all the makeup and face full of plastic surgeries. I am not critical of her visuals she is just not a good actress in talent and visual presentation didn't match her character.
The more I watch the more I find the FL annoying. This casting was very very bad. FL acting has no life. It's not that she is very bad It's just there were better actresses in the industry.
