Quite often in historical times the wives would keep their surnames as a way to differentiate between them. It also shows lineage. Lots of officials wives come from prominent families. Not like the peons. The wives taking surnames of their husbands is quite modern and is a way to track who marries who. In my country if you divorce you can pay to remove the surname of your husband. OR you can choose not to take it. Most women take the surname of the husband as it's easier to deal with children going to school who have the husbands surname. Mrs. Soandso has children who are also Soandso it identifies the family unit.
