I don't know what they do in the novel, but in the drama it is implied that they go back to the capital/army when they are needed. After all Xie Zheng is the regent.

I am not going to lie - when Changyu imagined everyone in the town alive and well and then when Mrs Zhao asked about Mandi, I cried my eyes out.

I can't say when I enjoyed the drama so much as POJ, I am sad that it's over, but I guess there's always re-watch.
