In the source material, wwx's soul comes back in mxy's body but due to certain restrictions in Chinese media, wwx came back in his own body. I think fellow fans here would be able to explain it better since there are some points even I am not clear about.

He did not come back in someone else's body. His own face and outer appearance was retained and so was his soul. That's why he kept that mask of mo xuanyu.
