I suggest we wait for another JTBC statement to clarify the amount of questionable stuff in this drama. It's clear that the historical references in this drama are not surface level, and run deep, referencing multiple violent events. I wouldn't want this to get cancelled, but given the current situation that seems to be becoming more likely by the second. Also, unpopular opinion: I don't know how much I would like the writer changing major plot points on the script at this point, because that would almost definitely mess up the flow of the story. I'd rather have no drama than a shitty one.

Im seeing more reasons for this drama to be against Chun Doo Hwan than to be for his ideology. The actors, all have parents that were probably students in the 80's. The screenwriter herself was a university student at the time of the protests, and it's possible that she knew people in the protest, or was even part of the protest. I think she definitely has an interesting story to tell, and it seems sensible to let Snowdrop at least air an ep or two, to see what its political alignment is.
Also, it's important to note that the name of the young cho referenced in that twitter thread was Cheon Young Cho, whereas this character is Eun Young Cho, therefore unlike JE, this drama is not taking an actual historical figure and misinterpreting what they did. For all we know, maybe the character is only loosely inspired by the actual person.

Anybody here actually know what the history of these student protests were? I read up on the Gwangju Uprising, but that happened in 1980. Although the effects probably stretched out for a few years, I doubt that's all there is to it. Also once again, the drama takes place in 1987, and the cold war was pretty much over by then. I'm not sure to what extent the red scare propoganda was prevalent in Korean society at the time.

Regarding the NIS officers, they indeed did seem to heavily work for the government. However, based on what I read, their power was highly reduced after 1981, specifically after their leader assassinated the then president of SK. Once again, I'm not entirely sure what their power status and political alignment was at the time, so I can't confirm whether they were looked at as oppressive. If somebody has information on how the NIS officers were looked at specifically in the late 80s, please share that as well.
As it is now, the plot does look messy, although I can't say where I stand in the matter. There's a north korean spy, so for obvious reasons, concerns regarding the romanticisation of that are valid.
