Oh, you're just fun to read. Thanks! I really wanted to see this before, and now I have to. Where did you find…
I watched it on dailymotion since it was the only platform I could find but for others it’s also available on YouTube! And I also just found out that this show is also available on WeTV in my country!
Based on your reviews, I think xianxia/wuxia genre isn't for you :)
Yes haha, I say most of the shows that has *wuxia/xianxia* genre your ratings aren't high (Nirvana in Fire, Eternal Love, Ashes of Love, etc) but you should find ones that you enjoy. If this show isn't for you then just drop it :)
Just saw your review, I'm gonna answer the ones I know. Thanks for watching the show and giving your honest review! This is gonna be long, sorry for that XD.
1) What happened during the 3 months in the Burial Mounds? Nobody but the author knows for sure. We can only speculate and make theories. In an interview, MXTX (The author) refused to say how Wei Wuxian survived the Burial Mounds and developed demonic cultivation. (Novel) But she did say that what happened was horrific and that fans wouldn't want to read about it. Wei Wuxian must have been in terrible pain.
MXTX has also said that Wei Wuxian definitely didn't find any kind of mysterious book and learn demonic cultivation from it. He developed his demonic cultivation on his own. (Novel) In the drama he's just doing like a trickery cultivation. This is why it's not shown in the drama.
Also the drama script is interesting, because there's a differentation between 鬼道, demonic cultivation, and 诡道, which is like... trickery cultivation, I suppose? But phonetically, they sound the same. This is what he's explaining to LWJ on the roof, when LWJ offers to help him. As WWX explains, he's cultivating music and talismans, neither of which require a core. LWJ posits that it relies more on his state of mind and emotional stability, and therefore, it would be easy for a cultivator to slip up and get lost in the resentment they're trying to control, which is also why he keeps looking for music pieces to help WWX maintain peace.
If you're wondering, why didn't the show just made him do demonic cultivation? If I'm not mistaken, China has toned down WWX's character in the drama than in the novel. He was more morally grey in the novel. China-made drama publishing reasons (they actually have laws and protocols on how you can film and write certain archetypes). I heard like a protaganist can only do good things and not have their own faults which is kinda BS to me because I like when characters make mistakes, it makes them more human and making mistakes is in our nature.
2) The triangular scar was explained in the novel but not in the show, technically after Wei's death in the novel, Lan was devastated so he got completely drunk one time, broke into the Cloud Recesses’ storage and took the Wen Clan stick and branded himself on the chest. It's all because of censorship.
3) Does one's spiritual power relate to the ability to cast spells like it does to being able to use the sword? Yes and how do you get spiritual power? You have to meditate and train to get good at spiritual powering. This is called cultivating (as in, you cultivate your spiritual power) and people who do it are called cultivators. People who train to be able to fight monsters (cultivators) form a golden core. It’s basically like a well of spiritual power you form in your body that you can then grow bigger and better with even more training. The bigger your golden core, the more powerful you are. The swords are like the spiritual tools and they channel their powers through them.
I'm gonna elaborate more on this. Spiritual energy is developed within one’s Dantian (dantian something like a life force field), while resentment energy is from other’s (eg people who died painfully or wrongfully). And yes demonic cultivation is controlling that resentment energy and use it for other purposes. You are leveraging on the energy of others, while for spiritual energy, it would be your own’s effort and body.
It was not mentioned in the show but it’s mentioned in the novel - one of the “draw” of practising demonic cultivation is that you don’t need a golden core. Demonic cultivation doesn’t ruin the soul per se, it is more of clouding the mind and affecting one’s temperament. Think of it as being in an toxic environment where the people around you are constantly making negative remarks, your mental and life state will be affected too.
4) How did Wei get the amulet from the sword? The amulet was forged from the sword.
5) How was he able to use the amulet with his flute? The flute has nothing to do with the amulet. It's just like LWJ's guqin and LXC's flute. It's the music that WWX plays that controls the corpses. The whole reason people want the amulet is because it can be controlled by anyone and it doesn't just listen to WWX. XY managed to create a similar amulet with the fifth piece of Yin Iron and that's why it causes panic. His flute is special since he crafted it himself in Burial Mounds and more powerful and has some specialities (eg. controlling the amulet better I suppose) compared to the bamboo flute in the later.
The 16 years ago thingy, I agree with you. But in the novel it was 13 years. I don't like Netflix subtitles too. I prefer Viki and it's more accurate for me. The acting also I agree with you LOL. But since it's only a web drama and the show is budgeted (4 times lesser than actual drama) I can excuse that haha along with the other technical aspects (bad CGI, bad editing, whatever you said above, etc)
For me, I can understand Lan Wangji's character and relate to him. I think that some ppl forget that there are TWO protagonists to this story. Lan Wangji gets a little overlooked in that sense because his POV is outwardly quieter, reflecting his character, so some ppl reduce him to a love interest when there's a whole character arc that he goes through as well throughout this whole story. He has to completely shift the way he sees the world. His subtle actions and words speak volumes in those quiet moments - It shows in the rain scene. How much of character development he had from his teen years to his adultery was great for me.
I need to rewatch the show/reread the novel again since this is what I've remembered so far and it's been a while since I've seen it. I'll probably update again once I'm done with it.
I also like the ending lol. Tho it's open I think it's a smart way to give the ending for the viewers and to pass censorship tho it was rearranged. Lan Zhan calling out his name and Wuxian smile at the end. Subtle but great! For me it's a happy ending. Ending analysis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAYbsUwl8lM&feature=youtu.be
They are actually married in the novel!
I'm not sure if I answered everything tbh but yeah. I personally love Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's relationship in the drama compared to the novel (Maybe I'm into subtle romance hehe). They are my favourite couple.
Guys.... if u just want steamier scenes or more kiss scenes, then go to youtube, type 'Gay kiss scenes' and voila!…
I'm not annoyed at the part where they don't kiss and stuff, I think I'm more annoyed that the show is kinda reusing the same plot from 2gether itself, auditioning for the club again (I think I'm the only one who feels that way). I need something new from them :( but hey it's just a drama special.

I like Yanli and Wen Qing though. I feel like they're both a very big important character in the show. I've read https://kisskh.at/discussions/the-untamed/46977-character-analysis-spoilers-included and it makes sense to me.
